A Place For Miss Pretzel

Let's get this straight: Pretzel the pit bull enjoys people, other dogs, cats, watching TV, riding in cars and even taking baths.

Miss Pretzel came to LifeLine Animal Project's no-kill Dog House in Avondale Estates straight from the streets of Lithonia, where she was literally going door to door looking for something to eat. Dodging traffic and other dangers of life on the street, she was tired and hungry, both for food and affection. She likely had a home at one time but her owners could not be located. Like thousands of dogs and cats around the state, she was probably dumped or abandoned, left to live by her wits or die alone. LifeLine staff immediately decided that wasn't how the story was going to end for Pretzel, a sturdy young adult pit bull terrier with an excellent temperament. They decided she was too sweet and too smart to give over to tragic circumstances…

The Laughing Pit Bull

Brawny, beautiful and left behind - Logan the pit bull mix was tied outdoors and abandoned. LifeLine Animal Project rescued him.

The first thing you notice about Logan is his impressive, stand-up ears. It's impossible not to notice those ears. "I call him 'Batman dog' because of his ears," smiles Shannon Dunagan, receptionist at LifeLine's Spay & Neuter clinic in Avondale Estates. The second thing you notice is Logan's wide doggy grin that looks for all the world like he's laughing. His past is no laughing matter, however. He was tied outside and abandoned by his owners, left behind to a fate that almost certainly would mean an early death at an overcrowded county shelter. Logan's luck changed when LifeLine Animal Project took the healthy almost 2 - year old dog into their no-kill Dog House and that's where he has lived since being cast aside by his owners. Logan is…

"Free Fix For Pits" And More In February

February is National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month and to celebrate LifeLine Animal Project is fixing pit bulls for free and giving away a Fernbank Museum membership and a pet photo session with Dogumentary Portraits.

When people think of the month of February, most think of Black History Month, Valentine's Day or Leap Year. Animal welfare advocates and rescuers will be quick to add that it's also National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month and that World Spay Day falls on Feb. 28. One area animal advocacy organization, LifeLine Animal Project, is encouraging responsible pet ownership in February by offering free spay/neuter for pit bulls and pit mixes whose owners live in Dekalb, Fulton and Clayton counties. The promotion, called "Free Fix For Pits", has the animal welfare group working in tandem with the Humane Society of the United States Pets For Life Atlanta program to target the issue of pet overpopulation. "On any given day up to 70 percent of all dogs …

Drenner Sponsors Bill to Penalize Owners Of Dangerous Dogs That Attack

She says she was motivated by the recent attack outside Avondale Estates.

A recent dog attack on an elderly woman helped motivate state Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates) to sponor a bill penalizing the owners of dangerous dogs that attack. Margie Hunt, who lives near Avondale Estates, said she was getting her mail earlier this week when two bulldogs attacked her in her front yard, according to CBS Atlanta. Hunt said she fought them off with a butcher knife she carried. The dog's owner said she overreacted and that his dogs were the victims. Opinions are sharply divided on pitbulls and other dogs with the capability of attacking people. An August story in Decatur Patch headlined "Should You Adopt a Pit Bull?" was widely read and generated many reader comments. Here's a press release from the Georgia House …

I am the proud owner of four Pit Bulls and I whole heartedly support SEVERE punishment on ANY OWNER of ANY breed that attacks. Everything in perspective, I believe letting any dog of any breed run loose should be punishable by a night in jail and a progressive fine schedule. I believe any owner who allows their dog of any breed to procreate without a breeders license and professional breeding …   more ›

From Victim To House Pet

Ryan the dog was considered 'evidence' in a cruelty case and spent 2 years in a cage until his owner was convicted. Then he was slated to be euthanized.

In 2008 over 28,000 dogs and cats were killed in county shelters in Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties. In 2009 the numbers rose to almost 30,000.  Ryan, a young pit bull, barely missed being in those statistics because he and another pup, Matt, were in a cage waiting for a court date. The court date of their owner, to be exact. The dogs were removed from their home in DeKalb county in 2008 and their owner arrested for animal cruelty. Both dogs had numerous scars and bite marks on their bodies. Considered "evidence" by the county, they were kept in a cage together until their owner could be convicted or exonerated of all charges. After two years of the case winding through the court system, their owner was finally found …

Decatur Man Recovers After Dog Attacks, Kills His Greyhound

Joe Giordano was devastated when a pit bull mix killed Oreo, his beloved greyhound. He got back on track by adopting another retired racing dog.

In the movie “50/50,” a young man copes with cancer with the help of an adopted greyhound. Joe Giordano, 84, of Decatur doesn’t need a movie to tell him about the breed's healing powers. Giordano was physically injured and emotionally devastated in March when a pit bull mix attacked his greyhound, Oreo, as he walked her on a Decatur street. In the struggle, Giordano was dragged into the street and bitten. Oreo lost so much blood she had to be euthanized. "It was a horrendous experience," Giordano said. "It took me a month to get over the bruises. I was depressed because I was so attached to that dog." The retired CDC manager said he's getting back to normal now, thanks to physical therapy and the adoption of a new greyhound, Cocoa. “It …

Should You Adopt A Pit Bull?

Once proudly heralded as "America's Dog" the pit bull has become America's most argued about dog.

Laura Ingalls Wilder had one, as did President Theodore Roosevelt, Helen Keller and Fred Astaire. TV personality Racheal Ray has one named Isaboo. Singer Pink and tennis superstar Serena Williams own them too. American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, recognized breeds, are often lumped by public perception into a group that include various mixes of bulldog breeds, terriers and other dogs. All are widely referred to as "pit bulls", causing confusion as to what a pit bull actually is. The confusion extends to their reputation. They are undoubtedly strong, sleek, sensitive, stubborn and extremely smart, all traits handed down by their terrier and bulldog ancestors. Their history is one of …

Justice for Juno

Many people mistakenly think that purebred dogs don't suffer the same sad fate that mutts might, but registed breeds are abused and abandoned too

According to the Humane Society of the United States, 8 million to 10 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year and more than half of them never make it out. They are euthanized.  Between an estimated 25 percent to 30 percent of those homeless dogs are purebreds. Juno, a blue and white purebred pit bull nearly became a sad statistic. She was a cruelty case, found malnourished and locked in an abandoned apartment in DeKalb County. Juno was starving and had gaping wounds on her back when she was taken to LifeLine Animal Project for nourishment, treatment, training and rehabilitation. American Pit Bull Terriers are also referred to as American Staffordshire Terriers. There are those who say these terriers are not one but two …
