The DeKalb History Center will honor outstanding African-Americans who made contributions to the arts on Thursday for Black History Month.
The Dekalb History Center will honor outstanding African-Americans who made contributions to the arts during its sixth annual Black History Month celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Historic DeKalb Courthouse located at 101 E. Court Square in Decatur. The event includes: This year's living legend honorees are: Tickets can be purchased for $30 each if you are a member of the DeKalb History Center or $35 if you are not. Katie Abel at city hall says it's a one-day shoot. The AJC says Agnes Bruckner (from ”Private Practice” and “The Bold and the Beautiful”) is portraying Smith. Plenty of movies have filmed in Decatur, including "Zombieland," "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and "The Odd Life of Timothy Green."

Superior Court Judge Clarence F. Seeliger will speak at the Sept. 18 Lunch & Learn session at the DeKalb History Center about the Presidential Parkway and other cases from his career. The public is invited to this free event. It starts at noon in the old courtroom on the second floor of the the history center, also known as the old DeKalb County Courthouse, at 101 E. Court Square. The Presidential Parkway was "planned to run from downtown Atlanta to the suburbs east of the city, looping past the [Carter] Presidential library," according to a 1985 Associated Press story about a Seeliger ruling. A week-long birthday party starts Sunday with a fundraiser to benefit the DeKalb History Center.
The Brick Store Pub will celebrate its 15th birthday next week, starting Sunday, June 24, with a reservations-only party. The event on Sunday will benefit the DeKalb History Center and only 100 tickets are being sold. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple. The party will include appetizers and special beers. The Joe Gransden Trio will perform and the history center's Athos Menaboni mural will be unveiled in the pub. The eggshell mural is now on loan to the Brick Store after hanging on the walls of two banks. Storytellers will entertain kids in June and July at the historic Biffle Cabin.
Starting June 6, the DeKalb History Center is offering a series of storytelling sessions for kids 6 to 12 at the historic Biffle Cabin at 720 W. Trinity Place, behind the Swanton House. Admission is $4 per child for members or $6 per child for non-members. You'll get a 10 percent discount on a summer season pass if purchased in advance. Classes are 10-11 a.m. most Wednesdays. The DeKalb County Police Department will hold a memorial service for fallen police officers at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, at the DeKalb History Center at 101 East Court Square, Decatur. The fallen officers monument is between the gazebo and the back entrance to the history center, also known as the old courthouse. The public is invited.
