DHS Close Up Club Needs Info on WWII Soldiers

The Decatur High students plan to lay a wreath at the national World War II Memorial this month during the club's annual trip to Washington, DC.

The Decatur High Close Up Club will visit Washington, D.C., this month and plans to lay a wreath at the World War II memorial in honor of the 35 Decatur residents known to have died during that war. Chris Billingsley, the retired DHS teacher who is still involved with the club, said students are seeking information about the war dead. Close Up Club at MLK Service Project

The Decatur High civic club pitched in Saturday for the MLK Service Project.

Members of the Decatur High Close Up Club took part Saturday in Decatur's MLK Service Project. Volunteers from across the city repair the homes and work in the yards of low-income seniors. The service project continues Sunday and Monday, which is the official MLK holiday.

Decatur High Close Up Club Goes To Washington

The students visited the Supreme Court, the offices of U.S. Rep. John Lewis and Sen. Saxby Chambliss and the Heritage Foundation.

By Chris Billingsley Decatur High teacher and Close Up Club sponsor The Decatur High School Close Up students are having a great time in Washington, D.C.   Wednesday's "Capitol Hill Day" was a lot of work but the kids enjoyed themselves and learned a great deal.  The students took a tour of the Supreme Court, the Capitol, met with staff from the offices of John Lewis and Saxby Chambliss and had a seminar at the Heritage Foundation. On Thursday, students will tour Mt. Vernon and the Newseum. On Friday, students will lay a wreath at the Korean Memorial (dedicated to Edward R. Ravenel, Class of 1943, Charles Jackson, Class of 945 and Gene S. Blough, Class of 1948). The students will end the trip taking a tour of the White House and Arlington …

In fact the teacher did make the Capitol:capital mistake. It also appears in the text he sent to a local blog. The bigger question parents should be asking is why was the Heritage Foundation among the Washington institutions visited. I think it was inappropriate. Why not take the kids to other K Street lobbyist shops, too?   more ›

By Chris Billingsley Decatur High teacher and Close Up Club sponsor More than 40 Decatur High School students were at the General Assembly Wednesday participating in Georgia Close Up.   Several legislators, including Margaret Kaiser of Grant Park and Stephanie Stuckey-Benefield of Winnona Park, invited us to the floor before the start of the session for Q&A concerning some of the critical bills being considered over the next few days. Later in the morning the students met with influential lobbyists Tripp Martin and Mo Thrash.   Returning to the house gallery, the students were honored when Representatives Kaiser, Stuckey-Benefield, Abrams, Elena Parent, Mary Margaret Oliver and others asked them to stand and be recognized. Poetry Out Loud At DHS

Students recite verse before other students at Decatur High.

Decatur High students stood before their peers Thursday and spoke in verse. They were taking part in Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation contest. Teacher Nora Bergman says that junior Manal Sidi won this year's competition with her recitation of "Momma Said" by Calvin Forbes. She will compete in  the regional competition on March 11, which is being held at Decatur High School this year for the first time, Bergman said. Other competitors will perform at the high school's arts showcase March 1. The photos provided by teacher Chris Billingsley, faculty advisor for the Close Up Club.

DHS Club Holding Silent Auction Of Sports Memorabilia, Other Items

The Close Up Club is raising money for a trip to Washington, D.C., next year.

Decatur High teacher Chris Billingsley sent this email about a silent auction to raise money. The Decatur High School Close Up Club is trying to raise money to help 20 students spend a week in Washington, D.C. in 2012.   There are some great stocking stuffers on the list.  Think how happy your 12 year old boy would be getting a copy of the first 1888 National Geographic magazine or make the spouse happy with a Dan Uggla Bobble Head doll.
