Decatur Lawmakers Attend DeKalb Cityhood Meeting

Mary Margaret Oliver and Jason Carter were among several DeKalb Democratic officials who attended Monday night's legislative town hall meeting.

At a meeting that seemed to be designed to slow the on-rushing train of cityhood, Democrats in DeKalb’s legislative delegation urged residents to consider a variety of issues before deciding to incorporate. “You all have gotten our attention in a very substantial way; we hear you,” said state Sen. Jason Carter (D-42) told the several hundred people in attendance. “I’m not sold on the idea of creating new cities, but the fact that we have so many people here tonight is a good sign.” The meeting was held this past Monday at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, and was hosted by state Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver (D-Decatur). Oliver has been an outspoken opponent of the way that cities are created in Georgia, most recently during the debate over …

Members of the county legislative delegation invite the public to Clairmont Hills Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Members of DeKalb County's legislative delegation will hold a town hall meeting on growing cityhood efforts countywide Monday night. The meeting will be held at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church at 1995 Clairmont Road from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., according to state Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver (D-Decatur), who sent an email to supporters. The meeting will cover the process of creating new cities, associated tax implications and alternatives to cityhood, Oliver said.  As it stands, bills have been filed to potentially support new cities in Tucker, the Lakeside High School area, the Druid Hills-Briarcliff area and Stonecrest. DeKalb Leaders Offer Conflicting Views at Cityhood Forum

DeKalb County Commissioner Kathie Gannon said: "What is it that I want to fix? What do I want to change? ... A city may not be the answer for everyone."

After a second meeting about the cityhood process, are we any closer to seeing another municipality sprout out of the ground in northern DeKalb County--the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area more specifically? It's hard to say. Local leaders offered conflicting views on whether the area might be a good fit for cityhood at Oak Grove United Methodist Church on Tuesday. Former Republican state Rep. Kevin Levitas, District 82, organized the second meeting to include a balance of opinions, pro and con, on the subject. Republican state Rep. Tom Taylor, District 79, and Robert Wittenstein, a former Dunwoody city council candidate, were recruited to represent the positives of cityhood. DeKalb County Commissioner Kathie Gannon, District 6, and …

Legislators To Discuss Forming New City in N. DeKalb

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 in Oak Grove United Methodist Church

DeKalb legislators will participate in a second cityhood meeting in Oak Grove early next month focused on the pros and cons of creating a new city in North DeKalb County. Kevin Levitas, a former state representative, and head of the Briarcliff Woods East Neighborhood Association, will hold the meeting in Oak Grove United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Jan. 8. The meeting will follow up on another meeting Levitas held last month that included roughly 100 or so residents at the church. That meeting, which included Fran Millar, DeKalb County's sole Republican state senator, Tom Taylor, a DeKalb state represenatative, and Dan Weber, a former state senator in DeKalb, left many residents frustrated. Many said they felt they were being prodded to …

Senate Committee To Study City of DeKalb Idea

A City of DeKalb would be created out of unincorporated land in DeKalb County -- an idea that is affecting annexation discussions in the City of Decatur.

Legislators are discussing the idea of a City of DeKalb that would be created out of all the unincorporated areas of DeKalb County. State Sen. Gloria Butler, D-Stone Mountain, will chair a Senate study committee on the incorporation of the city of DeKalb, according to Neighbor Newspapers. Her office said the other committee members are Sens. Steve Henson, Gail Davenport, Emanuel Jones, Jason Carter, Ronald Ramsey and Fran Millar. From the story: Butler will be joined by a group of seven committee members, consisting of fellow legislators and local officials from DeKalb County. “Throughout the committee process, it is important to remember that the people who live in our cities and counties share an underlying love for their community,” …
