When the economy started to dip in the last few years, it didn’t just change the lives of many people, it changed circumstances for thousands of pets. Animal shelters nationwide reported an uptick in people turning in their family dogs and cats. This happened as people were forced to move out of their houses and in with relatives or into apartments that didn’t accept pets, or required a hefty pet fee. Someone dumped young puppies in a truck yard and left them to fend for themselves. Among the abandoned pups rescued is Tess, who now is waiting for her chance to go from the truck yard to her own yard.
Royal Potcakes Rescue is unique among animal rescues in Georgia. Founded by sisters Judy Marshall and Nancy Kluisza, the rescue was conceived to help the Royal Bahamian Potcakes, a recognized breed of dog in the Bahamas. Despite the grand moniker, the Potcakes - as they are called for short - are actually street dogs. These sweet-natured, laid back and leggy canines are a mixture of several breeds and until recently came from a fairly small, long-standing gene pool. They are indigenous to and roam freely in the islands. Like street dogs all over the world, they often are in need of help from humans.
