Here are some volunteer opportunities, courtesy of the City of Decatur webpage. Decatur High School Community Garden: Volunteers of all ages are invited to join experienced gardeners on one or more of several Saturday work days. Tools and refreshments are provided, but please bring work gloves if you have them. Work to be done includes turning compost piles, preparing raised beds, weeding plots, watering common plots, planting crops, clearing brush and kudzu and cleaning and sharpening tools. You can set up and close down the Artists Market, be an artist's helper or help at the community art project, the kids art festival, the fine arts exhibition, the dance, the silent auction, the information tent and the check-in desk for artists and volunteers. If you are 21 or over and would like to volunteer in the fall at the Decatur Craft Beer Festival or the Decatur Wine Tasting Festival, please remember that you will receive priority placement at those festivals if you have volunteered at a qualifying event during the year. The Decatur Book Festival is the last qualifying event before those festivals. There is usually a waiting list to volunteer at the Craft Beer and Wine Tasting Festivals, so take advantage of this opportunity. LeeAnn Harvey, the volunteer coordinator for the City of Decatur, says volunteers are needed for the annual Decatur Beach Party on Friday, June 15. The party sponsored by the Decatur Business Association starts at 5 p.m. and ends around 11 p.m. The fun includes 60 tons of sand, a kids' boardwalk with all games, music from Yacht Rock Schooner and dancing on the plaza. Adult tickets are $7 in advance online or $10 at the gate. Tickets for kids 3-12 are $5 and include all games and activities. Children two and under are admitted free. Decatur Arts Festival – Memorial Weekend There are still volunteer opportunities available set up and close down of the Artists Market, Artists Helpers, Kids & Teens Arts Festival, Silent Auction, and Theater & Literary Arts. Volunteers receive a Decatur Arts Festival T-shirt. The deadline to choose your T-shirt size for volunteering at the festival is Wednesday, May 9.
