Because of an annexation that took effect last summer, this empty corner is now a gateway to the City of Avondale Estates.
East College Avenue and Sams Crossing is a busy spot, with buildings on three of the four corners. But the northeast corner is empty. It has a flagpole and a for lease sign. The closest building is the empty Liquidation Outlet store. This intersection used to be part of unincorporated DeKalb County, but the City of Avondale Estates annexed it through legislation earlier this year. (Annexation of residential property requires a referendum, but not annexation of commercial property.) Now this corner is the far edge of the city limits and a gateway to the city. What should go here? Another business, or perhaps a sign welcoming people to Avondale Estates? If you like the sign idea, what should it say? About this column: Every week or so, we'll…

Do you have ideas about what kind of business or enterprise would work in the building where Maud Baker Florist used to operate?
Maud Baker Florist operated for years out of a building on Church Street, near the Commerce Drive intersection. The business moved to 385 N Clarendon Ave. in Scottdale, leaving the Church Street busines empty. What would you like to see operating out of the building now? Remember, it doesn't have to be a retail business -- doesn't have to be a business at all. About this column: Every week or so, we'll post a picture of a vacant store or lot in Decatur and Avondale Estates. You can tell us what you think should replace the empty space. Know of an empty building we should highlight? E-mail ralph.ellis@patch.com. Here are some previous articles that asked, What Should Go Here? The old Thumbs Up Diner in Avondale Estates. Ponce de Leon Ave. The bank is a branch of the Private Bank of Buckhead. The president of the Private Bank of Decatur is Judy Turner, a longtime community banker in Decatur. In a message from the bank, Turner said, “Charter customers of the bank have been discovering that our name exemplifies our approach: We believe that all customers should benefit from the private banking approach other banks reserve for a certain few. Chai Pani is expanding from its base in Asheville, N.C. Meanwhile, another Asheville favorite, Tupelo Honey, is looking for a place in Atlanta and is very interested in Decatur.
The old Watershed restaurant in Decatur, empty for more than a year, will soon have a new tenant. Chai Pani, which serves Indian street food in Asheville, N.C., will move into the old Watershed restaurant location on West Ponce de Leon, Tomorrow's News Today - Atlanta reported in a story on Thursday. Chai Pani's website says its run by a husband and wife team, Meherwan & Molly Irani. Meherwan, the executive chef, says, It seems that the typical Indian restaurant is in a rut – the ubiquitous lunch buffet, white table cloths & ornate plates, slightly austere service, and a predominantly North Indian menu. I wanted to bring the rest of India to the table – the colorful, vibrant & exquisite flavor profiles, the innovative regional diversity, …

Ace Hardware has released a video about the Decatur store, voted one of the coolest in the chain.
Ace Hardware has released a video about the Intown Ace store on Scott Boulevard, which the chain calls one of its "coolest" stores. Store co-owners Dave Jones and Tony Powers have big speaking parts and several customers are interviewed. Jones and Powers found out two months ago that their store was considered cool.
Do you have ideas about what this space could be used for?
The traffic is usually pretty heavy at the intersection of Church Street and Commerce Drive in Decatur, so you may have overlooked this two-story gray building. It stands between CrossFit Decatur and the Hope Clinic of Emory University, which is right on the corner. Burnt Fork BBQ is across the street. What kind of business or nonprofit would you like to see going into this space? Give your answer in the comments box below. The Decatur City Commission approved an ordinance to allow small batch distilleries, a wine-tasting permit for Greene's Fine Foods and an alcoholic beverage license for the Bermudez Mar Bar.
The Decatur City Commission met Monday night and quickly approved three agenda items on alcoholic beverages. One vote would allow a new kind of business in Decatur -- small batch distilleries. Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne said the city discovered it didn't have an ordinance regulating that kind of business when approached by an entrepreneur who wants to open a small batch distillery. Menne didn't name the entrepreneur. The city recently approved ordinances allowing commercial craft beer breweries. The vote on the distillery ordinance was 5-0, as it was when the commission granted a wine-tasting permit to Greene's Fine Foods on West Trinity Place and an alcoholic beverage license for Bermudez Mar Bar. The latter is a "coastal Mexican" …
