Decatur School Calendar: Important Dates

The first day of school is Wednesday, Aug. 1. Here are other important dates.

Here's the City Schools of Decatur calendar for the 2012-12 school year. Calendars for individual schools as well as calendars for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years can be found on the school system website. July 23-24. New teacher orientation. July 25. Opening day ceremony for staff at Decatur High Performing Arts Center. July 25-31. Pre-planning days for teachers. July 30. Ninth grade orientation. July 31. Most schools have meet-and-greets. Decatur High Close Up Club Goes To Washington

The students visited the Supreme Court, the offices of U.S. Rep. John Lewis and Sen. Saxby Chambliss and the Heritage Foundation.

By Chris Billingsley Decatur High teacher and Close Up Club sponsor The Decatur High School Close Up students are having a great time in Washington, D.C.   Wednesday's "Capitol Hill Day" was a lot of work but the kids enjoyed themselves and learned a great deal.  The students took a tour of the Supreme Court, the Capitol, met with staff from the offices of John Lewis and Saxby Chambliss and had a seminar at the Heritage Foundation. On Thursday, students will tour Mt. Vernon and the Newseum. On Friday, students will lay a wreath at the Korean Memorial (dedicated to Edward R. Ravenel, Class of 1943, Charles Jackson, Class of 945 and Gene S. Blough, Class of 1948). The students will end the trip taking a tour of the White House and Arlington …

In fact the teacher did make the Capitol:capital mistake. It also appears in the text he sent to a local blog. The bigger question parents should be asking is why was the Heritage Foundation among the Washington institutions visited. I think it was inappropriate. Why not take the kids to other K Street lobbyist shops, too?   more ›
