Chipotle To Open in Downtown Decatur

The restaurant chain will open a shop in the Suntrust parking lot at West Ponce and Commerce.

Downtown Decatur is getting a new restaurant chain: Chipotle Mexican Grill is opening a location, Decatur Metro reports. The restaurant will open in part of the Suntrust building, according to the article, citing information from a city official. The first Chipotle opened in 1993 in Denver and now has more than 1,400 restaurants across the United States, as well as in Canada, France and England. There are already three Chipotles operating within five miles of Decatur: at 1401 Oxford Road near Emory University, 2963 N. Druid Hills Road near the Toco Hills Publix and 718 Ponce de Leon Ave. near Freedom Parkway. You may also be interested in reading: Decatur Restaurants Make Essential List

Good Food, Good People: Decatur-Avondale Estates Patch Wants Your Restaurant Stories

Send us your stories about how these people make your community stronger, whether it's through their good deeds, hard work, great food, or just their friendly smile.

You know that bursting-at-the-seams rush of excitement you get when you discover a little-known eatery? The kind you can hardly contain to the point where you're texting your friends with still-greasy fingers? We recently received an e-mail in that spirit from a neighbor: An excellent hidden gem found right at our doorstep, Chateau de Saigon, just north of the intersection of Dresden on Buford Hwy (on the left). The restaurant itself is sparsely decorated and sits at the end unit of a small strip mall but the food is excellent, a combination of French and S.E. Asian cuisines. And its affordable. My friend and I ordered two appetizers, two wines and split and entree and the bill was around $40. In case you haven't noticed, we here at …

Mar takes the space previously occupied by Feast on East Howard Street, across from the old train depot. Hola! Mexican Cantina put up signs a few weeks ago. It moved into the spot at Church and East Ponce where the Decatur Diner used to be. No word on when the restaurants will open for business.

Capozzi's Restaurant Changing Owners

The North Decatur Italian eatery will be under a new name by this summer.

Capozzi's in North Decatur will be under new owners soon. The sale of the popular Italian eatery is expected to go through by next week, and the restaurant could have a new name by as early as this summer, according to Tomorrow's News Today. From the blog: The neighborhood Italian eatery has become one of the longest running eateries in the center.  An email was sent to patrons this week announcing upcoming changes to the restaurant.  The email invited  guests to come in this past weekend and next to say goodbye to current owners and to meet new owner "Tori." Reportedly, the sale of the restaurant is due to close by the 15th (tax day coincidence?) Additionally, the restaurant will remain Capozzi's until later this year, perhaps June or …

Sad to hear this news. I have found the food to be excellent and always enjoyed the atmosphere and staff. I too wish the current owners my best and will be sorry to see them go! My son loved working for this family and I hate to tell him the news. Renee Kirlin   more ›

Paper Plane, New Bar/Restaurant, Opens Friday

Paper Plane will operate in back of Victory Sandwich Bar on Church Street.

Paper Plane, a bar/restaurant in back of Victory Sandwich Bar in Decatur, opens for business on Friday. Victory opened in February and offers order-at-the-counter casual dining. Paper Plane will be a smaller and fancier sit-down restaurant with special cocktails. It will have a separate entrance reached by walking down an alley at 340 Church St.  Paul Calvert, who will run Paper Plane, told Creative Loafing, At Paper Plane we'll do dinner and drinks five nights a week - right now it's Tuesday through Saturday. [It will be] much more focused on the sit-down experience of dinner as opposed to Victory, which has more of a come-and-go feel. We have a menu of modern American-composed plates designed to walk the line between communal dining and …

First Look: Calle Latina

The Latin street food restaurant opened in the old BadaBing Catering space on Church Street in downtown Decatur.

There's a new restaurant in downtown Decatur. Calle Latina, a Latin street food place, opened last week in the old BadaBing Catering space at 406 Church St. Manager Jacob Olson said the spot was too small for the catering operation, so owner Michael Condon moved it to a larger kitchen near the Majestic Diner on Ponce de Leon Avenue. The menu features two soups with several kinds of empanadas, tacos and arepas. (See photo of menu.) Olson said the operating days and hours are still being figured out, but the restaurant is usually open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call the restaurant at 404-378-0020 or visit the Calle Latina website.

Good Latin street food. Great prices. A nice addition to the variety of good international eating opportunities available in Decatur. I had two large empanadas (one chicken, one pork) and a small side salad for $5! My wife had a LARGE bowl of arroz con pollo soup (chicken, rice, tomatoes) for $5! Both were delicious. Small space. Has been opened only a week or so with no publicity. I predict it …   more ›

Golden Corral to (Finally) Open Soon

Issues with its septic and sewer system kept the buffet chain from opening a new location at North DeKalb Mall last month.

After a period of delay, Golden Corral will open at North DeKalb Mall later this month, the buffet chain said Friday. The restaurant plans to have its certificate of occupancy from DeKalb County on March 22, and it will open for business March 25. The restaurant's free-standing location at the northeast end of the mall's parking lot was initially supposed to open sometime last month, but issues related to the mall sewer and septic system delayed the process, a Golden Corral spokesman said. "We've had one issue after another, but we've finally got it resolved," he said.

Chai Pani Open for Business

The Indian restaurant is serving lunch and dinner Tuesday-Sunday in the old Watershed building on West Ponce.

Chai Pani, an Indian street food restaurant, opened its doors Friday in the old Watershed space at 406 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. The restaurant website explains the name: "Chai Pani literally means 'tea and water.' It's slang in India for going out for a cup of tea, a tasty bite, a snack, or 'a little something.' " The husband and wife team of Meherwan and Molly Irani own Chai Pani. They run a restaurant of the same name in Asheville, N.C. Meherwan said Decatur and Asheville are very similar. "This is almost like a sister city," he said. The restaurant will be open Tuesday through Sunday, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for lunch and 5:30 to 10 p.m. for dinner. Menu items include Samosa chaat (an appetizer for two) for $7.99, a grilled paneer …
