"Free Fix For Pits" And More In February

February is National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month and to celebrate LifeLine Animal Project is fixing pit bulls for free and giving away a Fernbank Museum membership and a pet photo session with Dogumentary Portraits.

When people think of the month of February, most think of Black History Month, Valentine's Day or Leap Year. Animal welfare advocates and rescuers will be quick to add that it's also National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month and that World Spay Day falls on Feb. 28. One area animal advocacy organization, LifeLine Animal Project, is encouraging responsible pet ownership in February by offering free spay/neuter for pit bulls and pit mixes whose owners live in Dekalb, Fulton and Clayton counties. The promotion, called "Free Fix For Pits", has the animal welfare group working in tandem with the Humane Society of the United States Pets For Life Atlanta program to target the issue of pet overpopulation. "On any given day up to 70 percent of all dogs …

A Cat Named Betty White

Like her famous namesake, this cat is friendly, amusing and engaging. So why is she homeless and how did she end up in a shelter?

When Best Friends Animal Society in Utah approached LifeLine Animal Project and DeKalb County Animal Services about working with them on an innovative project called Feral Freedom, both local organizations readily agreed. Best Friends' Feral Freedom had previously proved quite successful in Jacksonville, Fla., saving the lives of community cats and vastly reducing the number of felines euthanized in shelters. An estimated 30,000 feral and stray cats each year end up in Atlanta’s shelters, where the only option is to kill them at the substantial cost to taxpayers of approximately $4 million. The directors of LifeLine and DCAS were eager for a better outcome for both Atlanta's cats and citizens. Euthanizing a large number of animals takes …

Good article. About time someone was doing something that worked! I saw Square Pub's tweet too and methinks they are ingnorant. Coyotes not only eat feral animals but also people's pets! Coyotes need to be moved out of the area b/c they can survive elsewhere. Feral cats need to be spayed and neutered and left alone. Great pest control and they don't bother anyone if they are not having babies all…   more ›

From Victim To House Pet

Ryan the dog was considered 'evidence' in a cruelty case and spent 2 years in a cage until his owner was convicted. Then he was slated to be euthanized.

In 2008 over 28,000 dogs and cats were killed in county shelters in Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties. In 2009 the numbers rose to almost 30,000.  Ryan, a young pit bull, barely missed being in those statistics because he and another pup, Matt, were in a cage waiting for a court date. The court date of their owner, to be exact. The dogs were removed from their home in DeKalb county in 2008 and their owner arrested for animal cruelty. Both dogs had numerous scars and bite marks on their bodies. Considered "evidence" by the county, they were kept in a cage together until their owner could be convicted or exonerated of all charges. After two years of the case winding through the court system, their owner was finally found …

Celebrating the Shelter Dog

October is "Adopt A Shelter Dog Month" nationwide and tails are wagging in anticipation.

How much is that doggy in the window? If it's a rescued or shelter pet, chances are that dog is less expensive to bring home and more is known about their temperment and health than dogs who are purchased in pet stores or from "puppy mills". "Some people might be reluctant to adopt from a shelter, thinking they are getting 'used goods' or that there's something unknown going on with the pets," said Rebecca Guinn, executive director and co-founder of LifeLine Animal Project, "At LifeLine we know the dogs in our Dog House really well and can help match the perfect dog for your situation." Many shelters and rescues do a full health and personality accessment of the dogs they save, update their vaccinations and spay or neuter them before …

Puppy Dog Tales

Clyde and Danika are two lively pups saved from sure death. Now all they want is a person to lick and a place to call home.

There's something about puppies. Young dogs have such zeal for life and the world around them that they can remind us of a more idealistic world, one that often gets lost to us in hurry, work and worry as we mature.  Most people will take a moment out of even their busiest day when a puppy comes into view. Writer Elizabeth von Arnim, who entitled her life story, "All The Dogs Of My Life" once wrote, "I would recommend to those persons who are inclined to stagnate, whose blood is beginning to thicken sluggishly in their veins, to try keeping four dogs, two of which are puppies." Puppy therapy, it's called. It's the giddy, ageless feeling you get when you engage with a youngster dog who is delighted by your mere presence. Perhaps your plans …
