Ever seen a dog with a cleft palate? Probably not, and there's good reason. Almost all die as puppies. Cliff has beaten huge odds and surgery will ensure his survival.
Cliff is a beautiful, beefy pit bull mix who loves to go on runs, has never met a stranger, adores cats and if your lap is empty he considers it a place he'd like to sit. He's very much like millions of other dogs in neighborhoods, homes and shelters the world over. Except he's not. Cliff is a very rare canine. He's an adult dog with a cleft palate. Far from being a simple cosmetic issue, when a dog is born with a cleft palate it's usually a death sentence. They are not able to feed normally from their mother because they are not able to latch on and create the suction needed to nurse. Imagine trying to drink through a straw without being able to close your mouth around it. Even if they do manage to feed or are fed by tube, liquid will …

When it comes to looking for love, even finding your perfect pet partner can be done online or off.
Adopting a pet is a big decision and many people count it as one of more pleasant and rewarding ways to enhance their lives and bring unconditional love into their home. But where to start? First off, reach around and pat yourself on the back if you've decided to adopt a homeless pet. Statistics peg the euthanasia rate in the Atlanta metro area at 60,000- 80,000 dogs and cats annually, one of the highest rates of any U.S. city. These dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are almost all put to death for one reason and one reason only: they don't have a home. The simple act of adopting a pet makes you a life saver. And don't worry if you have a specific breed you prefer over another. Twenty-five percent of all pets in shelters are purebreds. Also…

Photographs don't completely reveal the beauty and charm of Tessa the cross-eyed pit bull.
At one point during this year's Art B Que, Avondale's signature street party, there was a small crowd gathered around a particular dog crate in the adoption tent manned by LifeLine Animal Project. "Oooooh, look at that face!" one woman squealed. "Omigod, she is so cute," another person commented. A young child of about 5 years scooted around the group to see what everyone was looking at and came face to face with Tessa the pit bull terrier. He hesitated for a second as their eyes met, then stuck his hand in the crate and stroked one of her large ears. He then yelled for his parents, "I want this one!" His mom and dad gently reminded him of the two dogs they had at home and lured him away with a promise of a treat from King of Pops. As they…

Zsa Zsa was a pampered pit bull with a permanent home until her wealthy owner barricaded them both in a hotel suite, refusing to open the door for the Secret Service and a S.W.A.T team.
If Zsa Zsa sounds like a fancy name for a stocky grey and white female pit bull, it's probably because she once lived a fancy life. She lived in a mansion and was given the best of everything. Less than a year ago Zsa Zsa was a very well cared for "lady of the manor." Housetrained, healthy and happy, this extremely well-behaved pit bull enjoyed a charmed life, one that any dog or cat would be lucky to have. That all ended last year on an otherwise perfect Atlanta autumn day when Secret Service agents knocked on the door of a Norcross hotel suite where she was staying with her 69-year old owner. He was wanted by federal authorities for failure to appear in court on a fraud by wire charge. He barricaded himself and Zsa Zsa in the room, …

Animals lovers crowd Decatur Library to talk about how the county can better serve animals.
Sixty percent of animals taken to the DeKalb County animal shelter were euthanized, and a county task force held a hearing Tuesday night to discuss proposals to lower the kill rate. Susan Neugent, a member of the DeKalb County Animal Services Task Force, told a crowd of animal lovers that packed the Decatur Library auditorium that the situation “is something that screams for change.” DeKalb County Animal Services and Enforcement reported euthanizing more than 15,000 of the 25,662 animals taken to the shelter in 2008-2010, the task force said. Only 10 percent of those animals were adopted, 12 percent were taken in by animal rescue groups, 8 percent reclaimed by owners, 3 percent were found dead in their cages and 7 percent could not be …

Wizard is hearing impaired but he knows how to communicate
Wizard the white Pit Bull doesn’t just wag his tail when he sees you. He wags his whole body. He cavorts around in an energetic dance of greeting. His brilliant white coloring makes him stand out in a crowd, as does his exuberant personality but he’s different in another way as well. Wizard is hearing impaired. It’s hard to notice at first that he can’t hear because he greets you with such gusto. As you talk to him he responds like any dog who is excited to make a new friend – by licking every part of your face he can reach. Wizard was a stray, running around in harm’s way in East Atlanta when he was rescued by LifeLine Animal Project after it was reported that someone was shooting at him with a BB gun. One of the veterinarians at LifeLine…
