It happened on Christmas Eve morning. The burglars kicked in the door of an Oakhurst house and stole electronics and presents.
Decatur police have made two arrests in a brazen Christmas Eve burglary in Oakhurst that was captured on home security video. Demarco Termeri Riley, 18, of the 900 block of Bolton Road, Atlanta, was charged with burglary Sept. 28 and is now in the DeKalb Jail. A juvenile was arrested several months earlier, said Sgt. Jennifer Ross, a Decatur police investigator. Ross said police are looking for two other other suspects believed to be juveniles. The burglary at a house on Fayetteville Road caused outrage beyond the borders of Decatur because it was captured on video and posted on YouTube, where it has been viewed about 18,000 times. The video starts with a gray car pulling into the driveway and a passenger going to the front door. When …

The store has stirred some controversy in the Decatur neighborhood, but some people are happy to see it open.
Family Dollar opened its doors in the Oakhurst neighborhood on Thursday. By Friday afternoon, a steady stream of customers and curious area residents were checking out the store. Marty Maddox accompanied his mother, Peggy, on a shopping trip to the new store. They have lived in the area, on the border between Oakhurst and Kirkwood for 50 years, and he said they were both happy to see it open. "They needed this for this community," he said. "It's been a long time coming." Many in the neighborhood voiced objections about the store, arguing that it wasn't the right fit for the gentrifying area. The Decatur store will operate out of the shopping center where the Big H store operated until it closed nearly 10 years ago. Oakhurst Church now …

You can find the discount store in the shopping center next to Oakhurst Church.
A Family Dollar store will open Thursday, Aug. 2, in the shopping center at 630 East Lake Drive in Oakhurst, according to the company website. Family Dollar spokeswoman Bryn Winburn has said the store will have 8,000-9,000 square feet of space and employ eight-10 "team members." The store hours will be 8 a.m.-10 p.m. The Oakhurst opening, first reported in Decatur Metro, is part of a companywide expansion. The company website said 13 other stores open Aug. 2 and a total of 35 stores will open across the country in August. The Decatur store will operate out of the shopping center where the Big H store used to be. Oakhurst Church now occupies the middle section of the building. The other end of the building, where Mulligan's Restaurant and …

Decatur Patch ran an article about 10 days ago on the Family Dollar store that's coming to Oakhurst. It should open in mid-summer. Patch will give a more exact date later, but for now we'd like to know more about what people in the neighborhood think about Family Dollar. The comments on the last story were pretty strong. Here are some examples: I think that Family Dollar is NOT what Oakhurst needed. It would have made much more sense to have a small, neighborhood grocery in that spot. I am certain that the landlord did not take that into consideration...everyone knows we need a grocery store on the south side of the tracks. I will shop there! It will be convenient and helpful for those of us who cannot afford half a million dollar homes. …

The City of Decatur is starting its annual Neighborhood Cleanup Days on Saturday in a section of Oakhurst. Public works crews will will collect yard trimmings, building materials (as long as they're not from private contractors), tires, appliances (unless they Freon) and trash that would not normally be placed in pay-as-you-throw bags. Some things will not be collected: Liquids, dirt, bricks, blocks, stone, rocks, concrete and motor vehicle batteries or parts. The city website says crews will visit these spots in Oakhurst on Saturday, April 7: Maxwell Street; Third Avenue (Eastlake to Northern); Oakview Road (East Lake Drive to Second Avenue, south side from Second Avenue to 1736 Oakview Road); Second Avenue (East Lake to Northern); Fourth…

The season of free music is upon us. The popular Jazz Nights at Scottish Rite concert series kicks off Thursday, April 5, at the Solarium at Historic Scottish Rite at 321 W. Hill St. in Oakhurst. A different jazz artist or band will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday at the old hospital building. Most people spread out a blanket, open a bottle of wine and soak in the sounds. The website for the concert series lists the rules, and they're pretty simple: bring blankets not lawn chairs, throw away your trash and stay out of the flower beds. Kids are welcome. Here's the lineup of musicians: Coming in May, free concerts on the Decatur Court Square. When September rolls around, the fall version of Jazz Nights at Scottish Rite will be held.

Billy Bob Thornton and John Hurt discuss the making of the film.
"Jayne Mansfield's Car," the Billy Bob Thornton movie partially filmed in Decatur, hasn't come out yet in the United States, though it premiered recently at the Berlin Film Festival. A promotional video of Thornton and actor John Hurt being interviewed includes some movie scenes, including one shot at the old Big H store in Oakhurst. The actors speak in English, but the subtitles are in German. If you move down to the 5:26 mark you'll see the store in the background as Robert Duvall and John Hurt talk in the parking lot. When the movie crew visited in July, they turned the building, which now houses the Oakhurst Church, into a grocery store. Of course, the building actually was a grocery store decades ago. Thornton and Hurt talk about how …

About 500 volunteers showed up Saturday and also Sunday to work on Decatur's MLK Day Service Project. They repaired houses and worked in yards of low-income senior citizens in the Oakhurst area. The project continues Monday, with openings still available for morning and afternoon shifts. You can just show up at the Solarium in Hill Street at the beginning of the shifts. The three-day project attracted the attention of Fox 5 News. LeeAnn Harvey, volunteer organizer for the City of Decatur, sent out an email Sunday describing the project. I look on the glorious blue sky and beautiful weather this weekend and think about last year’s “Snowmageddon” that didn’t deter over 1,200 volunteers from coming out to volunteer during Martin Luther King …
