Avondale Estates Registers First Motorized Cart

The first registered cart is owned by Matt Miller. Cart drivers must be 16 and have a valid driver's license.

Avondale Estates has a new transportation mode. On Tuesday, resident Matt Miller became the first resident to register a motorized cart at city hall. In an email from city hall, Miller said, "I plan to use my motorized cart both for utility--carrying firewood and pine straw around the yard--and also for transportation around town. It's convenient, relatively inexpensive to operate, and just plain fun to drive!" The city commission approved an ordinance in December allowing these motorized carts--with required safety features not found on regular golf carts--on many city streets. Avondale Estates OKs 'Motorized Cart' Ordinance

Don't call them golf carts. These low-speed vehicles are now allowed on the streets of Avondale Estates, except for the main drag, Avondale Road/East College Avenue.

After nearly two years of discussion, the Avondale Estates City Commission has given a third and final reading to a motorized cart ordinance. Residents with driver's licenses can now tool around town in these low-speed vehicles except for the busy main street known as U.S. 278, Avondale Road and East College Avenue. The city is emphasizing that plain old golf carts, like you might find at the country club, are not allowed because they don't have required safety features such as  front and rear lamps, a horn, a rearview mirror, hip restraints and hand holds. The commission had discussed allowing carts since early 2011, leading Mayor Ed Rieker to comment, "The wheels grind slowly" when the ordinance came up for final reading Dec. 17, 2012. …
