The Decatur High civic club pitched in Saturday for the MLK Service Project.
Members of the Decatur High Close Up Club took part Saturday in Decatur's MLK Service Project. Volunteers from across the city repair the homes and work in the yards of low-income seniors. The service project continues Sunday and Monday, which is the official MLK holiday.

The MLK Service Project, Decatur's major give-back effort of the year, takes place this weekend. Volunteers visit the homes of low-income seniors to make hosue repairs and clean up their yards. Last year, about 1,300 volunteers put in 7,628 hours doing yard work and home repairs for seniors, with the work having a value of $162,934. The annual MLK Jr. Service Project is always Decatur's biggest volunteer effort of the year. Last year, about 1,300 volunteers put in 7,628 hours doing yard work and home repairs for seniors, with the work having a value of $162,934. Next Tuesday is Restaurants for Repairs day in Decatur. A number of restaurants plan to donate a portion of their proceeds that day to the MLK Service Project. The MLK Day Service Project is a major undertaking in Decatur, with churches, school groups and civic organizations pitching in on the MLK weekend to clean up yards and repair houses for lower income senior citizens. In conjunction with Restaurants for Repairs, city staffers will be selling "Keep It Indie-Catur" shirts for $15 on the square between 5:30 and 9 p.m. Participating restaurants include:

The Atlanta Regional Commission cited the city for community involvement and collaboration.
The MLK Day Service Project involves hundreds of Decatur residents each year. They are organized into work crews that clean up or renovate the residences of senior citizen over the three-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The Atlanta Regional Commission recently honored the City of Decatur for organizing that project with a CREATE Community Local Government Awards program. Decatur's award was for community involvement and collaboration. The ARC said: Senior citizens are sometimes forced from their aging homes because they can’t afford to maintain them. About 500 volunteers showed up Saturday and also Sunday to work on Decatur's MLK Day Service Project. They repaired houses and worked in yards of low-income senior citizens in the Oakhurst area. The project continues Monday, with openings still available for morning and afternoon shifts. You can just show up at the Solarium in Hill Street at the beginning of the shifts. The three-day project attracted the attention of Fox 5 News. LeeAnn Harvey, volunteer organizer for the City of Decatur, sent out an email Sunday describing the project.
