The MLK Day Service Project is a major undertaking in Decatur, with churches, school groups and civic organizations pitching in on the MLK weekend to clean up yards and repair houses for lower income senior citizens. Paul Mitchell, the event chairman, came up with some stats for the 2012 service project. Of course, these numbers only tell a small part of the story, since the project creates good will througout Decatur. For a look back at 2012 MLK Service Project Day, check out the photo gallery that ran last month. *This is how the MLK project leaders came up with that figure. Independent Sector calculates the hourly wage of volunteer time ($21.36 for 2010) based on the hourly wage for all non-management, non-agriculture workers, as …

In LifeLine Animal Project's busy office, five cats lend a paw to the daily workload.
On any given day at LifeLine Animal Project you will find their office bustling with activity, from rescuing homeless pets and addressing the needs of companion animals in the community to accepting appointments for their low cost spay and neuter clinics. There's also a fair amount of bathing, climbing on chairs and desks, and napping near the window. The latter activities are not the staff at rest or play but LifeLine's office cats going about their day. Not all the cats up for adoption at LifeLine are housed in the organization's cage-free Kitty Motel or are being tended to in foster homes. Some live in the staff's Avondale Estates office. Clarence the cross-eyed cat, Ting Tang, who has three legs, Mystery the beautiful black cat, Marsha…

Ryan Klee says getting cancer when he was 19 has turned him into the person he is today, and he wouldn't have it any other way. Klee, the public relations director for Lenz, Inc., shatters whatever image you might have about surviving testicular cancer. The 30-year-old isn't shy about talking, even joking, about his experience. "Know what my favorite pen is," he quips. "A Uniball." Klee's company is sponsoring the 19th Magic of Life Celebration for Cancer Survivors, to be held on the Decatur Square on Oct. 1 from noon – 3 p.m. Cancer survivors such as Klee can celebrate conquering the disease and compare stories with other survivors. Attendees will get lunch, hear live music performed by The Backyard Birds — a British Invasion cover band…

Paula Collins is chairwoman of the group that raises money for Decatur City Schools.
The Decatur Education Foundation was founded in 2001 to help students of the Decatur City Schools not only in the classroom, but through learning experiences in the community that lead to personal as well as educational growth. The organization is managed by executive director Gail Rothman and a 27-member board of directors. The new board chairwoman is Paula Collins and, after serving on the board several years, she has some definite ideas for moving the foundation forward. Collins, who grew up near Statesboro, moved to Decatur in 1981 to attend Emory University. Her involvement with the foundation began when real estate agent Emilie Markert asked her to host the Low Country Boil, an annual fundraiser for the organization, at her home. …

Major is a homeless hound with a heart of gold, one misshapen ear and a love for people and other dogs.
The Humane Society of the United States reports that 6-8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year. Meet Major. He's one of those millions of homeless pets but you'd never know it by his attitude. Major is a 5-year-old hound mix who was rescued by LifeLine Animal Project. He's a favorite among their staff and volunteer dog walkers because of his lively and loving personality. "He's a lovable goofball," said Debbie Setzer, LifeLine's community outreach director. "He's great with other dogs and he's a lot of fun." He was rescued a few years ago with a large group of rural dogs and he's been at LifeLine's Dog House in their no-kill shelter ever since. Major sees the world through a hound's nose and rose-colored glasses. He will …
Teen’s passion for baking and ease with customers makes good chemistry for local bakery.
Name: Colleen Suratt, 17 School: Decatur High Accomplishments: This young baker has been an important player in developing two wholesale lines at Sweet N’ Sinful, a business in Avondale Estates that specializes in custom cake designs and confections. Most recently the bakery launched a dark and milk chocolate line of brownies now featured in Whole Foods in three of its stores in the Atlanta area including the Ponce de Leon Avenue location. Getting the brownie product ready for Whole Foods was a long process, said proprietor Layne Lee. Although the recipe had been developed for some time, the production, branding, labeling and packaging had to be worked out and product demos in the stores had to be staffed. Colleen was there to help with …
