The deadline to register to vote in Georgia's general election is Tuesday, Oct. 9. In DeKalb County, residents can register to vote at the DeKalb County Elections Office at 4380 Memorial Drive, Suite 300, Decatur, GA 30032. The office phone number is 404-298-4020. Applications can also be mailed to the Georgia Secretary of State at Box 105325, Atlanta GA 30348-9562. Registration applications can be picked up at the county libraries or on the election office website. If you’re unsure if you're registered, visit the Georgia Secretary of State website.

Nonprofits should submit applications by 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6.
The deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, for nonprofits to apply for a grant from the Decatur Craft Beer Festival. Click here to download a copy of the grant application. Last year's festival donated almost $50,000 to groups such as the Decatur Education Foundation, Literacy Volunteers of Atlanta, the Decatur High Close-Up Club and the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center. The festival is held Oct. 20 and tickets go on sale at noon Sept. 17. The Decatur Barbecue, Blues and Bluegrass Festival, to be held Aug. 18 in Harmony Park, also gives grants to nonprofits. The deadline to submit an application is Aug. 18. You can find an application by going to the festival website and clicking on the "grant info" tab.

A lot of people were unhappy when they go their DeKalb County property tax assessments. Some folks said the value of their house more than doubled. If you want to appeal your assessment, you don't have much time. Friday, July 13, is the deadline to file the appeal. The Decatur Post Office will be open until 6:30 p.m.
Some Atlanta post offices will be open late on April 17 to accommodate last-minute tax filers. The Decatur Post Office at 520 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. will be open until 6:30 p.m. instead of the normal 5 p.m. The main Atlanta Post Office at 3900 Crown Road will be open and fully staffed until midnight, as always. The Boggs Road Postal Store at 1605 Boggs Road in Duluth will close counter service at 7 p.m. as usual, but will have staff on site to until midnight to handle last-minute tax filings. Taxpayers get two extra days this year because of Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C., that will be observed on Monday, April 16. If you filed for an exemption with DeKalb County, you must also apply with Decatur.
You have until the end of business on Monday, April 2, to apply for a Decatur homestead exemption. The City of Decatur website says, Homestead exemptions must be applied for this year no later than April 2. Applications after this date will be counted for the following tax year. If you previously applied for a homestead exemption, you do not need to re-apply. If you filed for an exemption with DeKalb County, you must also apply with Decatur. You must also apply if you qualify for a new exemption based on age or income. If you reside at the property you own, you may apply for the general homestead exemption online. You have until 4 p.m. Friday, March 30, to make a nomination for the City of Decatur Design Awards. Awards will be given in May for new residential and comercial construction, additions, historic preservation, landscapes/public buildings, sustainable design and energy efficiency. The Lelia Ross Wilburn Award will be given to individuals or organizations that promote preservation or excellence in design. You can find a nomination form on the City of Decatur website.
