It is fun to watch a child's eyes light up as he or she rips off the wrapping paper from a present, revealing a shiny brand new toy. However, that toy might not be the best fit for your little one. It's up to parents to make sure that new toys are not only age appropriate, but safe. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USPC), close to 186,000 emergency room-treated injuries were related to toys in 2009. Choking was among the leading causes of toy-related deaths. That's scary! Small toys and toy fragments can easily become lodged inside a child's throat, obstructing their airway.
