Being beautiful and well behaved doesn't protect a pet from becoming homeless. But it might help Petey find a new home.
Most of us have heard from friends, neighbors or co-workers about "problem" pets, the dogs or cats with behavioral or other issues that some owners either didn't know how to deal with or just didn't want to. In truth, many of these pets simply aren't shown patience and given the proper care, time and training. As a result some end up in shelters, on the streets or being shuttled off to a stranger via Craiglist or online ads. But what about the well-behaved pets? The good dogs? The sweet cats? Can they end up homeless too? Yes, they can. It can be because of an owner's life circumstances, finances, carelessness or neglect, but even the best behaved pets can end up in dire circumstances. Petey is good example. Petey (named after the Little …

LifeLine Animal Project wants to pair homeless pets with war vets in November by waiving dog and cat adoption fees for former and active duty military.
Nov. 11 is Veterans Day and LifeLine Animal Project in Avondale Estates decided to do more than simply wave the American flag. The non-profit wants to be a friend by offering a friend to the men and women of the armed services. A furry friend, to be exact, from their Dog House or Kitty Motel, where they rescue and rehabilitate homeless pets. Figuring that the loyalty of a pet and the loyalty of America's military deserved to come together in some way, LifeLine is dubbing November as "Pets For Vets Month" at their no-kill shelter and will waive all adoption fees for military personnel, past and present. “We are all deeply grateful for the brave men and women who put themselves in harm’s way for our sake,” said Blythe Randolph, board chair …

Delgado survived abuse and an uncertain future and is ready for a brand new life.
Animal cruelty cases often have sad, heart wrenching conclusions. Part of the mission of LifeLine Animal Project is to interrupt and change an unhappy-ending-in-progress for dogs and cats in need. When an abused animal comes in, like Delgado, a blue and tan Australian Shepard mix, their immediate physical and medical needs are taken care of first. Then a “whole dog” approach is put into action through love, attention and training. When he was rescued, Delgado was a downtrodden dog - starving, sickly and afraid of people. He was treated poorly before he got to LifeLine but under their care he has bloomed into a healthy and handsome pet. He's gone from skinny to a solid but compact 55 pounds. His coat, once dull and lackluster, is now silky…

Black dogs spend a longer time in shelters waiting for homes and are euthanized at a higher rate due to a pervasive perception problem dubbed "Black Dog Syndrome"
If you do an online search for “Black Dog Syndrome” you will get a number of hits that include stories from animal shelters nationwide and even a Wikipedia entry. They all focus on a stigma that much of the general public is not aware of: an apparent and possibly unconscious bias by those seeking to adopt pets and it causes them to pass over black dogs in favor of adopting lighter colored ones. While evidence is more anecdotal than scientific (there are no hard statistics on the syndrome), animal rescue professionals across the country have long noticed that black dogs at shelters are ignored and under-adopted in larger than normal numbers. And it’s not just dogs. The unfortunate phenomenon seems to be true for cats too. Reasons and …

Once a stray dog with two kinds of mange and two puppies, the collective future for this canine family was bleak but they beat the odds; When people care enough, anything is possible
What do you get when you mix the sturdy smarts of the Pitbull with the boundless energy of a yellow Lab and add just a little dash of the loyal Shar Pei? You get Mandy. Mandy is a bundle of energy with an intense eagerness to explore the world. A walk is not just a walk for Mandy, it’s an adventure. You would never know by looking at this friendly, full-of-life canine that she was once a down and out starving street dog with two kinds of painful mange and two puppies she struggled to take care of. Once upon a time the only certainty for her future was that if it didn’t include dying on the street then it included euthanasia at a local shelter. Right when it seemed that Mandy and her two little ones didn’t have a friend or a chance in the …

Many people mistakenly think that purebred dogs don't suffer the same sad fate that mutts might, but registed breeds are abused and abandoned too
According to the Humane Society of the United States, 8 million to 10 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year and more than half of them never make it out. They are euthanized. Between an estimated 25 percent to 30 percent of those homeless dogs are purebreds. Juno, a blue and white purebred pit bull nearly became a sad statistic. She was a cruelty case, found malnourished and locked in an abandoned apartment in DeKalb County. Juno was starving and had gaping wounds on her back when she was taken to LifeLine Animal Project for nourishment, treatment, training and rehabilitation. American Pit Bull Terriers are also referred to as American Staffordshire Terriers. There are those who say these terriers are not one but two …

Bob has done what many humans could not do. He has remained sociable and loving despite having his throat cut by strangers and being dealt tough breaks in the urban wild. Is there a happy ending for big-hearted Bob?
Cats have reputations as mysterious creatures with mercurial whims. They are often seen as the independent, take-me-as-I-am-or-leave-me-alone rebel of the domestic animal world. They were worshipped as gods by ancient Egyptians (cat owners joke that the feline has never forgotten this) and further legends state that they are filled with curiosity and can afford to take risks, because, unlike the rest of us mere mortals, they have nine lives. In our modern world the reality is that cats who are abandoned or are born feral live a life that is fraught with danger and most do not enjoy a normal life-span. They are at the mercy of weather, traffic, starvation, disease, other animals and people who might wish to do them harm. If cats do indeed …

Sweet natured and even tempered, Ava is a dog who quietly enriches lives but needs a home
Historian Edmund Fuller once told the story of a wholly reluctant Thomas Edison at a high society social function in New York, an event his wife had persuaded him to attend. The inventor finally escaped the crowd of people vying for his attention and sat alone in a corner with a resigned expression on his face. A friend edged near to him and heard Edison mutter to himself with a sigh, "If there were only a dog here!" No doubt the famous inventor was wishing for the relaxed, faithful, non-judgmental company of a good, solid, canine friend that evening. And if he was, he was perhaps wishing for a dog just like Ava. Ava is one of the many homeless pets rescued by LifeLine Animal Project in Avondale Estates and this former Fulton County stray …

Our daughter rescued a pair of pitbull mixes a year ago. She kept one and my husband and I kept the other and named him Buddy. He's the smartest, funniest and best mannered dog we've ever had. It would be hard to find a better pet.   more ›
