  A few years ago, while reporting for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, I wrote a story about how towns in metro Atlanta were looking for new ways to market themselves. Some of them paid marketing firms thousands of dollars to devise slogans, taglines, seals and logos. Duluth, for instance, shelled out $60,000. Several town leaders said they envied Decatur because it already had a clean, distinctive logo -- the three buildings representing homes, schools and places of worship. The folks in city hall know they have a good thing and protect that logo. They don't let just anybody use it.
