By Joe Thomas Renewal System Solutions High energy bills got you down? Many homeowners think that adding more insulation or upgrading to high efficiency windows will shrink their energy usage. Actually, home performance is much more complicated. It’s a science, and just like people, each house has its own DNA. So, before you dive into your ductwork, consider taking a whole-house approach to energy efficiency. A holistic approach to your home means identifying and correcting problems, rather than just treating the symptoms. It ensures you’re making the right improvements toward better comfort, air quality, and energy efficiency. The most important step is determining where your home is losing energy – and your dollars – by getting it tested…

My focus this week is entirely on Avondale Estates. Specifically, I look at two houses completed there in 1950. One of these structures is a two-story home in brick with black trim and highlighted with green: 32 Wiltshire Drive has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as a very traditional character overall. Its foyer includes toile wallpaper; its kitchen has cabinetry and open shelving in vivid, pale blue. The stainless steel appliances -- including a gas range -- lend the kitchen a more modern feel. Outside No. 32 are a screened side porch (shaded by awnings in the aforementioned green) and a garden (shielded from peckish critters by rustic latticework fencing). The grounds also feature a shed, as well as spreads of tawny gravel …

Hideaways should never be confused with hideouts. Yes, my beloved American Heritage Dictionary defines each as a "place of ... concealment," but it's the criminal connotation of the latter that is worrisome. A hideaway is a place where one ceases to worry over criminals, misplaced wildlife, hurtling planets (the one we live on, among others), and so forth. I think of the stretch of Church Street between Trinity Place and Howard Avenue as "Hideawayland." When I lived in Decatur, I spent years driving on all the surrounding streets, but never along the block in question. I believe I had moved to the far side of town before I realized that Church Street is, in fact, two-way there; I had always assumed it to be otherwise. Near its intersection…

Rounded archways, as I have written here before, are among the home details that always catch my eye. One of this week's homes possesses just such an arch, in addition to something I had not previously written about: a spiral staircase. At 256 Lamont Drive, a pleasingly rounded arch separates the living room and the dining room. The latter space has a bay window and an elegant dome light that provide generous illumination. Completed in 1938, No. 256 has five bedrooms and three bathrooms. It has hardwood flooring throughout the main level and carpeting in the bedrooms upstairs. In the kitchen is a two-tiered granite counter that incorporates a stovetop and seating -- ideal for serving foods truly right off the griddle. That spiral staircase…

Let's talk location (You know: "Location, location, location"?). Because I moved years ago from Decatur to West End, putting me on the far side of I-75/85, I have to come up with good reasons to make the cross-town trek to Your DeKalb Farmers Market. Judging by the numbers of people whom I have to circumnavigate whenever I do get to shop at DFM, I'm not alone in my devotion to it. An Avondale Estates home, 449 Kensington Parc Drive, has the manifold advantages of being a mere half mile from the farmers market, a mile (or so) from the Village at Avondale, and only a couple of miles from downtown Decatur. Also nearby is the bike trail that lets riders two-wheel their way, almost free of motor traffic, nearly to Freedom Park. This two-story …

With its facade covered in painted shingles and its main entry set in the base of a stacked-stone pillar, 3405 Burdett Court broadcasts the attention its builders devoted to materials before finishing construction in 2002. Other noteworthy flourishes to this Avondale Estates home include glass bricks, used to frame the master bath's tub with a bay "window," and a pergola of rough-finish timbers behind the house. No. 3405 has three bedrooms, two bathrooms (and a half), 10-foot-high ceilings on its main level and hardwood floors. The parlor fireplace, also made of stacked stone, echoes the exterior. Circling back outdoors, the grounds feature an elevated garden (where the pergola stands) filled with perennials and accented with a fountain. A…
