Anti-Walmart Group Marches Through Decatur

Good Growth DeKalb opposes construction of the big box store at Suburban Plaza.

About 60 people marched from Suburban Plaza to downtown Decatur Saturday morning to show their opposition to a proposed Walmart. The march was organized by Good Growth DeKalb, a citizens group that formed after Selig Enterprises announced renovation plans for Suburban Plaza shopping center that include construction of a Super Walmart. The "outreach walk" started at 10 a.m. Saturday at Suburban Plaza, located just outside the Decatur city limits in unincorporated DeKalb County. The marchers, including a handful of musicians and somebody dressed as a gorilla, went down Church Street, spent about 15 minutes at the Marta plaza near the Decatur Square and headed west on Ponce de Leon Avenue. Selig Enterprises has obtained all the necessary …

Anti-Walmart Group Holding 'Outreach Walk' Into Decatur Saturday

Good Growth DeKalb supporters will walk from Suburban Plaza down Church Street.

Good Growth DeKalb, a citizens' group, plans to walk down Church Street into Decatur Saturday morning to raise awareness of developers' plans to build a Walmart at Suburban Plaza. The "outreach walk" will start at 10 a.m. near the fabric store at Suburban Plaza, the aging shopping center located just outside the Decatur city limits. Good Growth DeKalb says rides will be provided back to the shopping center at noon. Selig Enterprises wants to renovate Suburban Plaza and build a Super Walmart on the site. The project already has the proper zoning and other forms of governmental approval. But some people who live around the shopping center oppose the Walmart, saying it will bring traffic and congestion to the neighborhood. Other people …

Anti-Walmart Group Considering Legal Fight, Raising Money

Good Growth DeKalb, which is fighting the construction of a Walmart Supercenter in Suburban Plaza, has met with attorneys and is raising money to explore a legal fight against the international retailer and Selig Enterprises.

A group of local residents fighting the construction of a Walmart Supercenter inside North Decatur's Suburban Plaza is consulting attorneys about a possible legal fight against the international retailer and is raising money to pay for it. About 20 residents showed up to a Tuesday evening meeting of the newly named Good Growth DeKalb at North Decatur Presbyterian Church to discuss their continued fight against Walmart and Selig Enterprises, the local development company that owns the beleaguered shopping center where it will be built. Over the holidays, members of the group met with two sets of attorneys to get an idea of what it would cost, first, to find out if there is a legal angle to prevent Walmart from building and, second, what it …

Deanne, the types of comments you describe have been coming from BOTH sides. Maybe I went over the top to suggest that there may be internet trolls involved--I apologize. Otherwise, I think my comments have been very courteous, while voicing opposition. I guess it is not possible to disagree without some taking offense. As the development will likely go through, time will tell whether it was a …   more ›
