The building on Commerce Drive has been vacant since last fall.
This building on Commerce Drive used to be the headquarters for Decatur First Bank. Decatur First folded last October and the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance took over. Fidelity Bank assumed the deposits and occupied the building for a brief period, then vacated because that bank already has plenty of space. The bank has signed a letter of intent for One Decatur Town Square.
Decatur's newest banking operation plans to move into office space in the middle of downtown. The Private Bank of Decatur President Judy Turner said Saturday that the bank has signed a letter of intent to rent ground floor space at One Decatur Town Square, a building at 150 E. Ponce de Leon Ave. The bank offices will face Parkers on Ponce restaurant on one side and East Ponce de Leon Avenue on the other, she said. The bank only needs regulatory approval before signing the lease. She said the space is attractive because it formerly housed C&S Bank and NationsBank and already has a vault, which is one of the most expensive features of starting a bank. Judy Turner, formerly of Decatur First Bank, will be the president of the Private Bank of Decatur.
The Private Bank of Buckhead is moving ahead with plans to open a branch in Decatur, and new branch president Judy Turner hopes to secure office space by the end of the week and open for business in April. "We have proposals from several different landlords in Decatur," Turner said Tuesday in a telephone interview. "I'm hoping by the end of the week we'll have a lease signed." The branch, which will be named the Private Bank of Decatur, is looking for about 5,000 square feet on the ground floor of a building, she said. That amount of space would allow the bank to have about 10 employees. However, she said most of the available office space in Decatur is in the 2,300-3,000 square feet range. Decatur First Bank was closed today by the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as receiver. To protect the depositors, the FDIC entered into a purchase and assumption agreement with Fidelity Bank to assume all of the deposits of Decatur First Bank. The five branches of Decatur First Bank will reopen during their normal business hours tomorrow as branches of Fidelity Bank. Depositors of Decatur First Bank will automatically become depositors of Fidelity. Deposits will continue to be insured by the FDIC, so there is no need for customers to change their banking relationship in order to retain their deposit insurance coverage up to applicable limits.
