Drug Take-Back Day Is Saturday

Bring your unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs to the Decatur, Avondale Estates and DeKalb County police departments between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Decatur, Avondale Estates and DeKalb police departments are participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This is an event where citizens can turn in unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs so they can be safely disposed of.   Residents of the Decatur and Avondale Estates area can take old prescription drugs to these locations. In April 2012, citizens turned in a record-breaking 552,161 pounds (276 tons) of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal at the 5,659 take-back sites that were available in all 50 states and U.S. territories, according to the police departments.

Attempted Child Abduction Reported To DeKalb Police

A man in a black pickup truck approached a 5-year-old girl at Fenway Circle and Oldfield Road.

DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish released this information Wednesday afternoon about a child abduction attempt. It occurred just outside the Decatur city limits off Midway Road, between South Candler Street and South Columbia Drive. The DeKalb County Police Department is alerting the community about a suspicious person after a five year old girl was enticed by a stranger. According to detectives, on 6/5/2012 at approximately 4:00 p.m., the child was walking near her home by Fenway Circle and Oldfield Road when she was approached by the unidentified man.  It's reported he asked her several personal questions and invited the five year old to get inside his truck.  The child refused and ran home.  Police were notified after the …

Gunshot Killed Sycamore Drive Man

Authorities are still not releasing much information about the investigation.

The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office says a gunshot wound caused the death of a man found inside his Sycamore Drive home two weeks ago. DeKalb County police have released few details about the slaying of David Johns, 55. Family members went to check on him the morning of May 11 because his employers called and said he didn't show up for work the previous day, police said. Johns lived in the 900 block of Sycamore Drive, just outside the Decatur city limits. The medical examiner's office didn't release any other information, saying it's an active investigation. Police have said there was trauma on the body but didn't release the cause of death. They have not given a motive or said if they have any suspects. A funeral for Johns was …

DeKalb Police Investigate Burglaries

Three houses were broken into March 28.

DeKalb County police are investigating five recent break-ins -- three on March 28 -- that occurred in unincorporated areas close to the Decatur and Avondale Estates city limits. Laptops were taken in all the burglaries. No arrests have been reported. DeKalb police provided this information:

Man Unwittingly Bought Picture Frame Instead of iPads

Man told police he spent $500 on the fake iPads at Chevron near Avondale Estates.

  What a way to start the new year. On Jan. 1, a man told DeKalb County police that two men sold him three fake iPads, for which he paid $500, at the Chevron gas station just outside the Avondale Estates City limits. The man said he was approached by the men with what appeared to be three unopened iPads. The man opened the package after the subjects left, and found a picture frame instead, the police report stated. The men were described as two black males in their late 20s; one subject had gold teeth and dreaded hair, was 5'10" and 180 pounds; the second subject had a tattoo on his neck and was about 5'8" and 150 pounds, according to information in the report.
