Decatur Clears Way for Craft Beer Brewing

What's next? Perhaps a craft distillery.

The ordinance that now allows craft beer brewing in Decatur may have to be amended to allow a craft distillery. Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne said Monday night that someone who wants to open a distillery has approached the city. It's not allowable now under city ordinances but that's the kind of business Decatur wants to encourage, she said. "It's the new trend," Menne said. The city commission voted 5-0 to amend the city zoning ordinance to allow craft beer brewing in the East Decatur Station area. Three Taverns and Blue Tarp Brewing want to start making craft beer there. These breweries want to sell beer on the retail level. The amendment will not affect Twain's, which is a microbrewery and does not sell off premises.

Oh very excited about the potential of micro distilling. The craft beer avenue is cool but distilling is such an untapped market especially in the the atlanta area. Good call Decatur.   more ›

Craft Beer Ordinance On Agenda

The Decatur City Commission will vote on amending the zoning ordinance to allow craft beer brewing.

It looks like a big step will be taken Monday night for two local craft beer breweries, Three Taverns and Blue Tarp Brewing. Both want to brew beer around around East Decatur Station. The problem: The city discovered local zoning ordinances didn't include a brewing category. To fix that, the City of Decatur is rewriting the zoning ordinance. The proposed change, to be voted on at 7:30 p.m. tonight by the Decatur City Commission, would allow the creation of up to 200,000 barrels a year. For comparison purposes, the city says Sweetwater Brewery in Atlanta produces about 100,000 yearly. The change would establish a license category for the manufacture of beer in the C-3 commercial district under certain conditions and establish a license fee …

Beer Growler To Open 5 Franchises

Brookhaven, Suwanee, Sandy Springs, Alpharetta and Johns Creek will soon have Beer Growler shops.

The Beer Growler is expanding deeper into the Atlanta suburbs. Beer Growler franchises are expected to open by the end of July in Brookhaven at 1400 Dresden Road and in Suwanee at 4140 Moore Road. By the of the summer, franchises should open in Sandy Springs, Alpharetta and Johns Creek, , Denny Young, one of the co-owners, said Thursday afternoon at the Beer Growler store in Avondale Estates. Young said he and the other owners want the franchises to look something like the shop in Avondale Estates, but their big concern is maintaining product quality. "Nobody will be selling Bud Lite in these stores," he said. The shops will only sell growlers -- 32- and 64-ounce glass jugs used to transport draft beer for off premises consumption. They …
