Chai Pani Open for Business

The Indian restaurant is serving lunch and dinner Tuesday-Sunday in the old Watershed building on West Ponce.

Chai Pani, an Indian street food restaurant, opened its doors Friday in the old Watershed space at 406 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. The restaurant website explains the name: "Chai Pani literally means 'tea and water.' It's slang in India for going out for a cup of tea, a tasty bite, a snack, or 'a little something.' " The husband and wife team of Meherwan and Molly Irani own Chai Pani. They run a restaurant of the same name in Asheville, N.C. Meherwan said Decatur and Asheville are very similar. "This is almost like a sister city," he said. The restaurant will be open Tuesday through Sunday, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for lunch and 5:30 to 10 p.m. for dinner. First Look at Native: A Local Joint

The "seasonal comfort food" restaurant in Decatur will have a soft opening this weekend and grand opening Monday.

A new restaurant called Native: A Local Joint will have a soft opening this weekend and a grand opening Monday at 340 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. in Decatur. Owner John Mathews described the menu as "seasonal comfort food"  for the whole family. Daily specials will be listed on a chalkboard and based on food available at local farmers markets. Since the chef and front-of-the-house manager have New Orleans connections, the menu (see attachment) will have a Southern flavor. The lunch menu includes a muffuletta panini for $8.95, cream of tomato basil soup for $4 and $5 and calamari for $7.95. The Indian street food restaurant will occupy the old Watershed space on West Ponce.

The Indian street food restaurant Chai Pani will open March 1 at 406 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. in Decatur. Chai Pani will be operated by the husband and wife team of Meherwan and Molly Irani, the owners of a restaurant by the same name in Asheville, N.C., according to an announcement that went out Tuesday afternoon. The announcement said Indian cuisine in the United States is often dominated by northern Indian influences. Meherwan said in the message, I wanted to bring the rest of India to the table – the colorful, vibrant and exquisite flavor profiles, the innovative regional diversity, the fun, the excitement, the bright flavors of street food and the simple refinement and comfort of home cooking.
