What Should Go Here? Avondale's 'Erector Set'

Construction of this building stopped when the developer went bankrupt.

The bare steel girders stick out on Avondale Estates' main drag as a visible reminder of big dreams that collapsed. Finders Keepers consignment shop planned to move into the first floor of the building started at Maple Street and East College Avenue, with two residential units built on the second floor. But work halted when Florida-based developer Century Retail filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Locals call the unfinished building "the Erector Set," a reference to the metallic construction toys. The building was just one small piece of Century's plan to remake the face of Avondale Estates. Avondale Estates Making Changes, Rieker Says

The mayor gives his yearly state of the city speech.

Changes are afoot in Avondale Estates, Mayor Ed Rieker said Monday night in his state of the city speech. The most noticeable changes involve real estate. Rieker said court action may soon change the status of Century Retail property encumbered by bankruptcy. That company planned to redevelop a section of town before the economy killed the project, leaving as a reminder the skeletal frame of a two-story building on East College Avenue. Rieker said the pending annexation of commercial property along College Avenue between Maple Street and Sams Crossing means a new western gateway into the city can be formed.
