Decatur OK's Sales Agreement for Callaway Building

After purchasing from DeKalb County, the city plans to sell the property to a developer who will turn it into a mixed-use development.

The Decatur Urban Redevelopment Authority (made up of city commission members) voted 4-0 Monday night to move ahead with the purchase of the Callaway Building and surrounding property from DeKalb County. The authority voted on the sales agreement. The city plans to sell to Cousins Properties, which would demolish the building and convert the property into a mixed-use development, though that project wouldn't be finished for years. "That will put the property back on the tax rolls, which has been the objective from the beginning," Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne said. DeKalb Commission Delays Vote on Callaway Building Sale to Decatur

Property earmarked for mixed-use development.

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners deferred a vote Tuesday on selling the Callaway Building in downtown Decatur. The county owns the building at 120 West Trinity Place, which houses some government functions. The county had been in negotiations to sell the building to Decatur. The city aims to redevelop the site, according to a report in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The Chronicle reported that Decatur is in talks with Cousins Properties Inc. for a project that would bring mixed-used retail and residential redevelopment to the site. Cameron Golden, a Cousins spokesman, declined comment Tuesday.
