The DeKalb History Center will honor outstanding African-Americans who made contributions to the arts on Thursday for Black History Month.
The Dekalb History Center will honor outstanding African-Americans who made contributions to the arts during its sixth annual Black History Month celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Historic DeKalb Courthouse located at 101 E. Court Square in Decatur. The event includes: This year's living legend honorees are: Tickets can be purchased for $30 each if you are a member of the DeKalb History Center or $35 if you are not. You can purchase tickets by going to their membership page and scrolling down to the "Donate" button.

By Heather McElroy We were so fortunate to have Pearl Cleage, an Atlanta based writer, professor at Spelman College and activist, visit St. Thomas More Catholic School Feb. 16 to speak with our students. Ms. Cleage delighted the audience by reciting "We Speak Your Names", the poetic celebration commissioned by Oprah Winfrey to honor African American women. After she read her poem, she engaged the children in a question and answer session. While answering the students' questions, she enouraged them to write, to remember that "we're all connected", and to "be involved in the life of your country." Patch just received an email about a Black History Month event scheduled for Friday, Feb. 17, in Oakhurst. The following press release provides some details. Ghana-born djembe and dunun master drummer Weedie Braimah will teach a drum workshop from 7:30-10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at BNM Studio at 409 Mead Road Decatur.
