Don't Be Afraid of Animal Rescuers

You know what a great gift is for an animal rescuer? Cat litter. Dog biscuits. Old linens. A shared post. A re-tweet.

Do you know an animal rescuer? Chances are you do. Those crazy, wonderful souls who spend time and often risk health, job and security to rescue and rehab puppies, kittens and unwanted oldsters. Large-hearted introverts and, less often, extroverts, who give aid to the abused, the hopeless, the helpless animals that many of us walk by every day and don’t even notice. Or even if we do, we turn away, thinking, “I can’t do anything.” Oh yes you can. If you know an animal rescuer, you can do something. If you know an animal rescuer, buy them a meal one day. I guarantee they have gone without eating, or forgotten to get their own food in order to make sure a homeles animal had enough to eat. Or you can directly help them feed abandoned and …

If one day, thru all the hurt and trench work to save a defenseless animal from the gutters of society, we are remembered for having made a difference - in turn we are touched by those souls we save. It is all worth it. When humans leave a void in our lives, when we need friends the most and they disappear, when we give our devotion to many and never hear back in return -- we know that those we …   more ›

Second Life Celebrates 2nd Anniversary

Two years after opening during a sluggish economy Second Life Upscale Resale has drawn bargain hunters and donated $42,500 to local animal rescues.

Second Life Upscale Resale in Avondale Estates is almost 14-years old, but that's in dog years. In human time the popular resale shop is about to turn two. Several years ago, Tanya Mahous Tobias, who had spent a decade working in the airline industry, decided she needed a change in outlook and employment. Opportunities were scarce in the down economy but the thought that she and her husband Toby should be doing something for animals was foremost in her mind. They were inspired by their beloved dalmatian Lucky, a formerly homeless dog deemed "unadoptable" who lived happily with the Decatur couple. The inspiration they came away with from having Lucky in their life eventually translated into the following: take a risk, nothing is impossible …

I love, love, love this place. I dig deep into my best belongings to give to the animals they help serve. It is a pleasure to donate things that I would never give to other places all because of their mission to help animals...a cause so close to my heart.   more ›

Blossom The Cat Hopes Spring Will Bring A New Home

One of 40 cats saved from an animal hoarding situation, playful Blossom is now itching to go from a rescue to a residence.

This spring, Blossom is hoping that someone with a kind heart will spring her from the Kitty Motel at LifeLine Animal Project. She is safe at the Avondale no-kill rescue. She recieves healthy food and daily care and attention from volunteers and staff. Yet some days Blossom will sit and paw at the window of LifeLine's Kitty Motel. "She really wants a home," says Mickie Blair, LifeLine's field coordinator who oversees almost everything concerning the cats at the shelter. Blossom is 3 years old and has a lovely black and white pattern on her longish fur. "People are always commenting on how pretty she is," Blair continues "and she's so playful and sweet, but she's also very much a typical cat in that you can tell when she's not happy. She's …

"Free Fix For Pits" And More In February

February is National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month and to celebrate LifeLine Animal Project is fixing pit bulls for free and giving away a Fernbank Museum membership and a pet photo session with Dogumentary Portraits.

When people think of the month of February, most think of Black History Month, Valentine's Day or Leap Year. Animal welfare advocates and rescuers will be quick to add that it's also National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month and that World Spay Day falls on Feb. 28. One area animal advocacy organization, LifeLine Animal Project, is encouraging responsible pet ownership in February by offering free spay/neuter for pit bulls and pit mixes whose owners live in Dekalb, Fulton and Clayton counties. The promotion, called "Free Fix For Pits", has the animal welfare group working in tandem with the Humane Society of the United States Pets For Life Atlanta program to target the issue of pet overpopulation. "On any given day up to 70 percent of all dogs …

Celebrating the Shelter Dog

October is "Adopt A Shelter Dog Month" nationwide and tails are wagging in anticipation.

How much is that doggy in the window? If it's a rescued or shelter pet, chances are that dog is less expensive to bring home and more is known about their temperment and health than dogs who are purchased in pet stores or from "puppy mills". "Some people might be reluctant to adopt from a shelter, thinking they are getting 'used goods' or that there's something unknown going on with the pets," said Rebecca Guinn, executive director and co-founder of LifeLine Animal Project, "At LifeLine we know the dogs in our Dog House really well and can help match the perfect dog for your situation." Many shelters and rescues do a full health and personality accessment of the dogs they save, update their vaccinations and spay or neuter them before …

Caution: Cats At Work And Play

In LifeLine Animal Project's busy office, five cats lend a paw to the daily workload.

On any given day at LifeLine Animal Project you will find their office bustling with activity, from rescuing homeless pets and addressing the needs of companion animals in the community to accepting appointments for their low cost spay and neuter clinics. There's also a fair amount of bathing, climbing on chairs and desks, and napping near the window. The latter activities are not the staff at rest or play but LifeLine's office cats going about their day. Not all the cats up for adoption at LifeLine are housed in the organization's cage-free Kitty Motel or are being tended to in foster homes. Some live in the staff's Avondale Estates office. Clarence the cross-eyed cat, Ting Tang, who has three legs, Mystery the beautiful black cat, Marsha…

To Dance With The White Dog

Wizard is hearing impaired but he knows how to communicate

Wizard the white Pit Bull doesn’t just wag his tail when he sees you. He wags his whole body. He cavorts around in an energetic dance of greeting. His brilliant white coloring makes him stand out in a crowd, as does his exuberant personality but he’s different in another way as well. Wizard is hearing impaired. It’s hard to notice at first that he can’t hear because he greets you with such gusto. As you talk to him he responds like any dog who is excited to make a new friend – by licking every part of your face he can reach. Wizard was a stray, running around in harm’s way in East Atlanta when he was rescued by LifeLine Animal Project after it was reported that someone was shooting at him with a BB gun. One of the veterinarians at LifeLine…

A Happy Ending for Bob The Cat

Once a severely abused stray cat, LifeLine Animal Project helped Bob go from a street address to a suite address

Bob the cat was first introduced to Patch readers in the story, "The Tao of Bob." His story was one of a friendly homeless cat who, after having his throat cut by strangers, was wandering the streets hurt and hungry . He was rescued by a good Samaritan and after months of treatment at LifeLine Animal Project, he was put up for adoption only to be repeatedly passed over  because he is FIV positive. Although healthy and asymptomatic, Bob’s diagnosis scared off potential adopters who were otherwise charmed by this amiable and roly-poly 16 pound feline. Sherri Nielson wasn’t scared off. Nielson, the former head of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and now the executive director of Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem, N.C., was taken …

A Tale of Two Kitties

Apricot and Kiwi are a duo who started out as drain kittens but have grown into a pretty pair of house cats. All they need now is a house.

Throughout the ages the domestic cat has appeared in and inspired many great works of art. Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, Franz Marc and even Andy Warhol all famously painted cats in various states of action or repose.  Apricot and Kiwi, two homeless cats saved by LifeLine Animal Project in Avondale Estates, look like the sort of felines you see in fine art. They are stunning sister cats in muted shades of grey and white with vivid copper-colored eyes.  One has long hair, one has short hair.  Their natural feline grace seems amplified by their unusual coloring.  Their rescue story started when they were five weeks old and in serious danger. A stray mother cat had hidden her litter of kittens in a storm drain but she was no where around when the…

Rescuing Tess

Someone dumped young puppies in a truck yard and left them to fend for themselves. Among the abandoned pups rescued is Tess, who now is waiting for her chance to go from the truck yard to her own yard.

Royal Potcakes Rescue is unique among animal rescues in Georgia. Founded by sisters Judy Marshall and Nancy Kluisza, the rescue was conceived to help the Royal Bahamian Potcakes, a recognized breed of dog in the Bahamas.  Despite the grand moniker, the  Potcakes - as they are called for short -  are actually street dogs. These sweet-natured, laid back and leggy canines are a mixture of several breeds and until recently came from a fairly small, long-standing gene pool. They are indigenous to and roam freely in the islands. Like street dogs all over the world, they often are in need of help from humans. After visiting the Bahamas on vacation, animal-lovers Marshall and Kluisza couldn’t bear to leave those behind who needed aid. So they did …
