The theatre is having to move out of the Avondale Estates building at 119 Center St.
The Academy Theatre is moving by June 15 from the building in Avondale Estates where it has operated since 2005. The building at 119 Center St. changed hands during the settlement of the bankruptcy case that tied up a lot of downtown Avondale Estates property over the past few years. The new owner needs the building for a new use, theatre Artistic Director Robert Drake said. Drake and Managing Director Lorenne Fey said the theatre needs spaces for offices, storage, rehearsal and performance. Anybody who'd could offer any of those spaces to the Academy Theatre should contact Drake at rwdrake@bellsouth.net or 404-474-8332. Until the theatre clears out, the BattleActs! improv ensemble will be peforming May 25 and June 15 and two concerts will…

The theatre in Avondale Estates said the cancellation was caused by building problems. The theatre also may lose its lease and have to move out altogether.
The Academy Theatre in Avondale Estates has cancelled this weekend's Cinco-de-Steamfest (a combination of Cinco de Mayo and a steampunk festival) because of what theatre management calls "building problems." In an email to Patch, artistic director Robert Drake said the organization may have to move out of its building at 119 Center St. next month. Drake couldn't be reached Tuesday to elaborate on the problem. Avondale Estates City Manager Clai Brown said the city doesn't have any problems with the theatre. Brown said the building owner wants to put it on the market. Several people working at the building on Tuesday afternoon said the theatre had lost its lease. Patch will seek more information on this development. Cinco-de-Steamfest was …

By Hugh Simpson About 300 people attended S.T.E.A.M.Fest over two days at the Academy Theatre in Avondale Estates. The festival finished Sunday with Retrofuture by More Brains Media, a multi-media presentation on the evolution of the Steampunk movement in literature, film and performance. Fans were also treated to The Adventure of Capercaille Bridge, which tells the story of Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's older brother, who takes on the Case of the Stolen Bridge. Mr. Saturday & Sixpence, Steampunkers from San Antonio, did some space-time bending vaudeville and improv for the closing ceremonies. Veronique Chevalier, originally from Fontetinebleau, France, and the 2010 emceee for the world famous Comic-Con Steampunk Party, came all the way from …

By Hugh Simpson I am the former consultant to another event that has grown to be a monster of a production - DragonCon in downtown Atlanta on Labor Day weekend. On Saturday I attended another event that could become the next DragonCon -- S.T.E.A.M.Fest in Avondale Estates at the Academy Theatre. So what is a SteamFest? Well, it is a venue for the Steampunk genre that got its start back in the days of one of my favorite TV series -- The Wild Wild West. Here is what Austin Sirkin wrote about Steampunk: "Nearly everyone agrees that Steampunk looks cool." (Well, I sure agree with him!) "With its detailed, intricate aesthetic made up of brass, leather and wool, Steampunk is nearly the polar opposite of the sleek, minimalist designs that …

If you haven't heard of Steampunk, here's a definition from Steampunk.com: Steampunk has always been first and foremost a literary genre, or least a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that includes social or technological aspects of the 19th century (the steam) usually with some deconstruction of, reimagining of, or rebellion against parts of it (the punk). That should give you a rough idea about what will happen at S.T.E.A.M.Fest on Saturday and Sunday, April 15 and 15, at the Academy Theater in Avondale Estates. S.T.E.A.M.Fest stands for Steampunk Theater, Entertainment, Arts and Music Festival. The festival will include musical performances by groups such as Daniel Valdez and the Steampunk X-Men and an appearance by Dr. Wolfram von…

A discussion about truth, theatre and the retracted NPR story on Steve Jobs will be held Wednesday night at he Academy Theatre in Avondale Estates. First, some background. In an NPR broadcast titled "The Agony & the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs," Mike Daisey told about hazardous working conditions at Chinese factories that make iPhones and other Apple products. But on March 16, NPR retracted the story, saying it "contained significant fabrications." Daisey apologized, kind of. NPR says Daisey told them, "I'm not going to say that I didn't take a few shortcuts in my passion to be heard. My mistake, the mistake I truly regret, is that I had it on your show as journalism, and it's not journalism. It's theater." The story has raised many questions …
