State leaders say they will delay implementing the Georgia drug-testing law while a similar measure in Florida is sorted out in federal court. File|Patch
Nick M July 4, 2014 at 10:44 am
Mack, it's a waster of taxpayers money. Some facts about Florida where the law was passed and thenRead More stuck down: A U.S. judge has struck down a Florida law requiring drug screening for welfare recipients, saying that it violated the constitutional protection against unreasonable searches. The testing fee of $25 to $45 was to be repaid by the state if the test came back negative, but applicants who tested positive would have been barred from receiving benefits for a year. Judge Mary Scriven permanently halted enforcement of the law in her ruling. She agreed with an earlier court finding that "there is nothing inherent in the condition of being impoverished that supports the conclusion that there is a concrete danger that impoverished individuals are prone to drug use ..." During the time the law was in effect, about 2.6 percent of recipients tested positive for illegal drugs, mostly for marijuana, according to the court documents. The failure rate was well below that of the general population. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found in a 2009 survey that about, 8.7 percent, of the population aged 12 or older had used illicit drugs in the previous month. Generally, the courts have allowed suspicionless drug testing only when public safety is at risk, such as for armed officers or railroad workers who operate heavy equipment. http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/welfare.asp

I have often wondered what liability a store owner would have if a criminal shot and killed someoneRead More in their store. If by Targets request I didn't carry my gun into their store and I was shot and killed because I was unable to defend myself...how does Target proved that they were properly looking after my best welfare?? My bleeding corpse would make one wonder if Target did all they could to keep their customers safe. Would they have to prove it? OR....do the criminals have more rights than I do? I would think that a certain portion of my death would have to be their fault if they didn't take steps to keep ALL guns out of the store?? Thoughts?
Phil Evans July 5, 2014 at 01:47 pm
I believe Target is riding the fence to try and appease Bloomberg's Moms Demand Action as well asRead More trying not to make gun owners mad enough to not shop there. They do not yet have a hard policy of prohibiting guns. They are merely "asking" that we don't carry there. At least one person I know of has openly carried his pistol in a Target store since this announcement, with no issues. I say carry on as if they've not made the request, to show the public what this really is about - politics and not safety. All they can do is ask you to leave, and if they do, publicize it to help others avoid their stores.

A kid is shooting up the school and an armed citizen just might not be able to look at the child and shoot them. Our society doesnt look at children as target practice, so when presented with a child with a gun, I dont buy that the average citizen would shoot a child. So what I get from this back and forth is that you folks have opinions that go back and forth however you like to make a point and then you also like to start crap either that or you cant read. What cops are you talking about, David? I don't understand what you are saying about it did them noRead More good to be armed. What is that suppose to mean? You don't make sense with your commit. Are you talking about the black kid that killed a cop with a assault rifle? The cop did not pull his weapon because cops as trained to try to talk to the other person, but this kid opened fire first. The cop did not have a chance to pull his weapon. You and Woody just don't understand anything. You only believe what you want. Even when hit in the face with the truth, you still won't get it.

IrishBobW July 12, 2014 at 04:54 pm
Sorry David, I thought you were talking about the coward who ambushed a cop while he was doing hisRead More job protecting the public. In that case a kid, trying to make a name for himself, was walking around carrying an assault rifle when the cop got out of his car to talk to him. The kid immediately opened fire killing the cop. In the case you were really talking about, I have to say it's you who did get the truth even when hit in the face with it. If you had, you would have understood that what you said was stupid as hell. The reason being armed didn't help those two cops was because they were ambushed while sitting down eating a meal at a Waffle House. Even on duty cops have a right to take a meal break. While they were eating, a man and woman walked over to them, pulled out their guns and murdered the cops before they had a chance to pull their own weapons. Even you must admit that was something few people would expect to happen, but it did, and it cost those heroes their lives. What you also failed to mention was the shooters then walked across the street to a Walmart where they pulled their guns and started shooting again. However, this time someone was there to stop them. A shopper who was legally carrying his own gun pulled it out and shot them both. Then, being the cowards they were, the shooters tucked their tails between their legs and hid while the citizen who shot them helped get the other shoppers out of the store. Security cameras then caught the two as the women shot and killed her friend and then turned the gun on herself. That couple were cowards for ambushing two cops, just as that kid was a coward for ambushing the other cop. Had the two cops seen what was coming, they would have been able to do something. Instead, it was ended by a private citizen legally carrying a concealed weapon. In your mind the citizen was wrong for carrying a gun, even though he saved lives. You wanted facts, those are facts. In your commits, I get the feeling you were saying it was the cop's fault they were murdered. I hope that's not the case. The cops were heroes because they were out there everyday protecting people like you form people like those cowards who ambushed them. Facts David, they really do make the difference, don't they?

James J MacInnis May 26, 2014 at 02:08 pm
Well Angela, I do not. I worked the VA as a Pharma. salesman during the 80's and 90's. I am now aRead More retired Veteran and since 2004 was subject to Government Care. Free good care was a myth. Many VAs in the 90's had excess capacity (WWII vets passing). Bush knew there was a problem by 2006 and the current Admin was so advised in 2009. The current President has had plenty of time to improve the situation. He does it all the time by fiat and by-passes Congress. Now, with an election we get a half-baked but legit proposal to use private health care to speed things up. Bingo! Yes Hon Mr. Bettencourt and Angela, Government is the problem - too many egos (both sides) quest for more power (both sides) and a ruling class who thinks they know better than the people, (they run this country-not the people). I do agree that people need to wake up and start voting based on the most qualified not the most popular or who's gonna give you the most free stuff. The country is divided now and will be until people realize they have to vote, be informed and not brainwashed by media. Surely Mr. Bettencourt you know of your neighbor (Vermont and Massachusetts), former President Calvin Coolidge. The excuse, "everybody does it" or "they're all to blame" does not wash and never did. Shame on you, the Hon Mr Bettencourt. Growing up in Massachusetts, NH, used to be admired as a well run State compared to Vermont (New Yorkers took over to avoid taxes). The VA situation is just the latest example of too much government power, poor oversight and veterans (consumer) getting the shaft. Today I greave for my lost comrades in Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan, my father, (WWII), his friends who I knew, (Korea) and my distant relatives (Revolutionary War). What better way to honor them then to get this great nation back on the right track. Be an Informed VOTER! Stop excusing poor/bad leadership

It is a sad fact of history that since the late 1700's when revolutionary war soldiers riotedRead More because they had not been paid the pensions they were promised, regardless of party this country has consistently failed in its promises to its veterans. Catherine, why not review the law itself instead of a bunch of lies from a liberal site. The linkRead More you posted holds very little fact concerning the GA law that will take affect July 1st. Examples: People under 18 can't own guns...true but neither can people under 21 unless a member of the armed forces. GA doesn't require a background check for the purchase of a forearm...just a blatant lie. The federal laws prevail on purchasing firearms and this is a GA requirement. Domestic violence perpetuators aren't required to surrender their firearms....again, a blatant lie. Anyone convicted of domestic violence loses their firearms and the right to ever buy another one. You liberals are just sickening with your lies, your lack of interest in truth, and you such easy willingness to fall for anything your puppet masters feed you. Disgusting that American citizens have fallen so far into the nanny state.
