A press release from Hands On Atlanta tells about the big picture.

This year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service marks the inauguration of Hands On Atlanta’s Civic Leadership Program, a grant competition designed to equip civic leaders to create and execute innovative, ongoing and volunteer-driven initiatives to alleviate local poverty.  The program supports social entrepreneurs, promotes group entrepreneurship, builds infrastructure for sustainability of the sector and develops youth leaders.

The day kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with two signature projects hosted by Delta Air Lines and Alston & Bird. In partnership with Hosea Feed the Hungry & Homeless, Delta Air Lines’ “Touch the Heart, Feed the Body & Warm the Soul” project at Carver High School will mobilize volunteers to assemble 6,000 bagged lunches for distribution to those in need in Atlanta and package more than 10,000 recycled fleece blankets collected from Delta Air Lines’ aircraft fleet for distribution to Atlanta’s homeless population and community shelters. A Presidential Volunteer Service Award will be awarded during this project.

Volunteers from Alston & Bird will work with youth graduates of the Boys & Girls Club’s Keystone Leadership Program to paint several murals throughout the Boys and Girls Club facility as well as prepare the organization’s garden for spring planting.   The event will include a keynote address from a 17-year old graduate of the program.
