Have You Ever Read the Declaration of Independence?

If not, you can hear some some DeKalb lawyers read it aloud on July 3.

With the Fourth of July approaching, I'm wondering how many of you have read the document that led to the creation of the United States.

I'm talking about the Declaration of Independence, that long-winded statement of purpose that starts, "When in the course of human events it becomes necessary ..."

You will soon have a chance to hear the Declaration of Independence read aloud on the steps of the DeKalb County Courthouse. Jodi Dick of Decatur sent along this information:

I'm a Decatur resident and also a member of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Our organization is joining other criminal defense lawyers around the country on July 3rd in a reading of the Declaration of Independence at various courthouses around the state and nation.

The reading starts about 10 a.m.

This idea made me realize I haven't read the Declaration of Independence since Mister Wiley Smith made me in the eighth grade. I'm glad he did.

Have you ever read the Declaration of Independence? If yes, how long ago and for what reason? You can expand your thoughts in the comments box below.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story said the reading would start about noon. The lawyers decided to move up the time.
