[VIDEO] New Superintendent Tours Schools

After being sworn into her position, Cheryl Atkinson met administrators and teachers at six DeKalb County schools.

DeKalb County Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson wasted no time in getting to know some of the district's schools.

Shortly after being sworn in Thursday morning at the in Decatur, Atkinson began visiting schools -- just as she said she would, before the DeKalb County Board of Education approved her in a 6-3 vote last month.

She met with principals and several teachers, shook hands and spoke with students, and got a first-hand look at some of the classes and activities the schools have to offer.

"It was my first day and I think it was important to be in the schools," Atkinson said. "I plan to visit every school and talk with every principal."

In a letter posted Thursday on the school system website, Atkinson said: "Today begins a new chapter in the history of the DeKalb County School District (DCSD), and it is a privilege for me to be part of the legacy. I am honored the Board of Education has entrusted me to focus our District’s efforts on student success, and I am confident that by working together we can reach our goal."
