New Head Coach at Decatur High School, Helping Young Athletes One Game at a Time

Scott Jackson, the new head coach of Decatur High School, is working to help young athletes reach their goals on and off the field.

There's a new head coach at Decatur High School.  Scott Jackson, who was the offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach last season, brings 15 years of experience across Georgia and a passion for leadership to the field.
"I think people are built a certain way and have certain callings in life and I think this is mine," Jackson said. "Fortunately for me, I guess I was able to recognize it."
Jackson found his calling while a student at the University of Georgia when after almost three years of study he changed his major from environmental science to science education.
"I decided to change my mind and here I am now," Jackson said.
In addition to serving as head coach of the football program, Jackson also teaches five periods of weight training to Decatur High School students every day.  DHS has only one full time coach in addition to Jackson, and relies heavily on community members to pick up the slack.
"That's particularly frustrating here and I know that a lot of metro schools deal with it," Jackson said.  "This is not their job like it is mine so they're giving of their free time to coach so sometimes they'll not be able to be here and you kind of have to alter things."
Jackson played football in high school and college and says that his experiences help him to relate to and understand the young athletes that he coaches everyday.
"That's probably the biggest joy, just seeing them realize their abilities and working towards goals and attaining goals and then just being successful," Jackson said.
The Decatur High School football season kicks off Aug. 16 with a scrimmage against Holy Innocents'.
