The First Day of School

Traffic heavy around the 4/5 Academy on Fifth Avenue.

School buses, cars, bikes and walkers filled the streets Wednesday for the first day of classes in the City Schools of Decatur.

Traffic was especially heavy around the 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue, where elementary students transfer to buses this year.

He said many parents drive or walk their kids to school on the first day, meaning the number of bus riders will probably go up on Thursday.

"That will be our first real test," Van Soelen said.

Bruce Roaden, the 4/5 Academy principal, urged parent drivers to turn onto Fifth Avenue off Oakview. Any other approach will cause a traffic problem, he said.
