Superintendent On SAT Scores

Edwards notes Decatur High scores went up five points while dropping across the state and nation.

Superintendent Phyllis Edwards has issued remarks on the latest composite SAT scores, which went up five points at (to 1518) while dropping across the state and nation.

Edwards noted that DHS offers many Advanced Placement courses, which help students become familiar with testing. She also said DHS had a 95 percent participation rate on the SAT.

"I am proud of the direction to encourage students to take these tests and gain experience on this type of test-taking," she said in a press release sent out last night.

"It is an approach that says it is more important to allow students opportunities even when the outcome of more students taking these tests tends to lower the average. We continue to be excited about the performance of all students in Decatur, particularly at Decatur High School. The work of teachers and students alike shine through these results."

She said that math scores, which didn't change at DHS while dropping across Georgia, need to improve. She said the gap between Decatur black and white students dropped from 495 to 421.
