Update: Renfroe Student Edged on Jeopardy! Kids

Blythe McWhirter was one of 15 kids picked to compete on the television show.

UPDATE: Renfroe Middle School student Blythe McWhirter didn't win the grand prize when she appeared Thursday on Jeopardy! Kids.

She finished a very close second, but won $2,000, said her dad, Cameron McWhirter.

The show was taped in advance, so Blythe and her friends watched the competition on the televisions at MoJo Pizza in Oakhurst following the first day of Decatur schools.

Only 15 kids from across the nation were picked to appear on Jeopardy! Kids this week.

THE PREVIOUS STORY: Blythe McWhirter, a seventh grader at Renfroe Middle School, will appear this week on Jeopardy! Kids, a spinoff of the game show for adults.

She is expected to compete when Jeopardy airs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday on WXIA-TV in Atlanta.

Bylythe is the daughter of Ramsey Muhly McWhirter and Cameron McWhirter.

If you want to watch the show with a crowd, the City Schools of Decatur website said MoJo Pizza in Oakhurst will play the show on all three televisions Thursday night.

The Jeopardy website says,

"Kids Week is one of the most fun times on our show each year," said JEOPARDY! host Alex Trebek. "I'm always impressed by the young players' intelligence and entertained by their boldness. They make such gutsy wagers that sometimes I wonder if they realize they're playing with real money!"

In order to qualify for the tournament, prospective contestants were selected from those who passed a 25-question online test. These hopefuls were then invited to attend regional in-person auditions consisting of a second 25-question test, an interview and mock game play.

Fourteen other kids from around the nation will compete.
