On the Ballot: Decatur School Board, Avondale Mayor and Commission

Candidates finish qualifying for Nov. 8 municipal elections.

Avondale Estates has three races contested posts on the ballot for the Nov. 8 municipal election --Β  mayor and two city commission seats.

In Decatur, there's only one contested race, for the city school board seat now held by John Ahmann.

Otherwise, established incumbents on the Decatur school board and city commission face no opposition.

A week of qualifying ended Friday. This is how the list of candidates breaks down.

Decatur School Board

  • District 2, Post B: Incumbent Julie Rhame. She has served since 2004.

Decatur City Commission

  • District 1, Post B: Incumbent Bill Floyd. He's the face of Decatur. He was elected to the commission in 1991, served as mayor pro tem from 1994-95 and has served as mayor since 1998. The commission picks the mayor from among themselves.
  • District 2, Post B: Incumbent Kecia Cunningham. She was first elected in 1999.
  • At large: Incumbent Jim Baskett. He was first elected in 1995 and has served as mayor pro tem since 2002.Β 

Avondale Estates City Commission:

  • Mayor: Incumbent Ed Rieker and City Commissioner David Milliron. Both men first took office four years ago. Milliron is the mayor pro tem. This race is shaping up as the hottest in this Patch.
  • Two city commission seats: Randy Beebe, John Washburn, John L. Quinn and Lindsay A. Forlines. Incumbent City Commissioner Michael Payne is not seeing re-election and Milliron is running for mayor.

Besides the municipal elections, a countywide education referendum on a special local option sales tax, or SPLOST, will be on the ballot in Avondale and Decatur.
