A lot of 5-kilometer races are held, but the one on St. Patrick's Day will be something special.
Decatur High student Lydia Simms organized the race for her senior project. The event will take place March 17 on the Agnes Scott College track and benefit the March of Dimes.
In an article in 3Ten, the high school media website, Simms explained that choice.
A premature baby herself, Simms’ has made the March of Dimes her cause. “I want to be an obstetrician. A lot of people in my family were premature, and I work at the Frasier Center, so babies are a big part of my life,” Simms said. “I guess I wanted to support a cause that I felt passionate about.”
The 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. and the one-mile fun run at 9 a.m. Registration is 30 minutes before each race. It costs $15 for the 5K and $10 for the fun run, with a family rate of two people for $15.
The top five finishers in each event will receive T-shirts. Runners and walkers should park on the main loop in front of the campus on East College Avenue or in the west parking lot on South McDonough Street.
