Celebrating Community & Connection: Decatur Presbyterian Church and Agnes Scott College

Agnes Scott College was founded by members of Decatur Presbyterian Church in 1889. This year, our annual service that commemorates and fosters this relationship will be held on Sept. 25, beginning at 9 a.m. The theme for the service is "What is the role of the church in higher education in the 21st century?" The guest speaker for the worship service will be the Rev. JoAnna Adams, a retired pastor in the Presbyterian Church (USA). She formerly served as pastor of Morningside and Trinity Presbyterian churches in Atlanta, North Decatur Presbyterian in Decatur, and Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. She also served as a member of the Board of Trustees for Agnes Scott College. The Rev. Adams is a graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary. In 2007, she was named Georgia Woman of the Year and was featured in Atlanta Magazine as one of the forty-five most loved Atlantans. She is known for building bridges both in the community and the church. Over the years, she has been especially involved in initiatives to combat homelessness and to build interfaith relations.

Before the worship service, during the Sunday school hour (9-10 a.m.), the church will host a panel discussion featuring President Elizabeth Kiss, a member of the ASC board of trustees, students, faculty, and the chaplain. Each will speak from his or her perspective about church related colleges in the 21st century. We are again planning for ASC alumnae, students, faculty and staff to participate in the 10:15 a.m. service, and following the service, there will be punch-on-the-lawn reception. If you would like to make a contribution to the service, it would be greatly appreciated. Please mark your calendar for this very special event and pass the word among your DPC/ASC friends!
