Atlanta's Stone Mountain: A Multicultural History

January Lunch and Learn with Paul Hudson and Lora Mirza, faculty members at Georgia Perimeter College who will present from their book - Atlanta's Stone Mountain: A Multicultural History - due out in Spring 2011.  Paul and Lora are a writing/research team; he is an historian and she is a research librarian.  Together, they specialize in Atlanta history, often with a focus on matters of race.

Few natural landmarks in DeKalb County are as old and as fascinating as Stone Mountain.  This comprehensive book covers the fascinating story of the mountain from prehistory to the 1996 Olympics and beyond, with an emphasis on history, nature and recreation as enjoyed by all types of people.  In their lecture, Paul and Lora will discuss Stone Mountain's geology and Native American heritage.  They will also delve into more recent history, which includes frontier and railroad development, the City of Stone Mountain, the quarry industry, race relations, the revival of the Ku Klux Klan, the meaning of the Lost Cause in the Memorial Carving, the origins of the State Park, and more.  The authors will also discuss the creative process in their first collaboration on such a significant topic.  Everyone has a Stone Mountain story, and the audience is invited to participate in the presentation.
