Assisting the Poor in Non-Poor Countries

"Assisting the Poor in Non-Poor Countries: Conceptual and Practical Issues" Presented by Ravi Kanbur.

Twenty years ago, 90% of the world’s poor lived in low-income countries.  Today, three quarters of the world’s poor live in middle-income countries.  How should this change the nature of the global commitment to assist the poor?  And how should it affect the operation of international aid agencies?  This lecture will address conceptual and practical implications of the new geography of global poverty.

Ravi Kanbur is the T.H. Lee Professor of World Affairs, International Professor Applied Economics and Professor of Economics at Cornell University.  Professor Kanbur’s primary research areas are public economics and development economics.  Topics on which he has published include risk taking, inequality, poverty, structural adjustment, debt, agriculture, and political economy. Kanbur has served on the staff of the World Bank.
