DeKalb Schools Hero Gets Fêted By Church

Antoinette Tuff, the quick-thinking DeKalb County schools bookkeeper whose actions averted yet another American school shooting, was honored by her church and Congressman.

described how she gently convinced the assailant that surrendering was the best option in bringing Tuesday's DeKalb school shooting incident to a peaceful conclusion.

Congressman Hank Johnson gave Tuff a proclamation at her church during services on Sunday and thanked her for bravery, the Associated Press reported.

Tuff became a national hero on Aug. 20 when a 20-year-old gunman entered McNair Discovery Learning Academy near Decatur in unincorporated DeKalb County and sparked a lockdown.

Though the gunman, Michael Brandon Hill, fired a few shots, no one was injured and he gave himself up without resistance.

Tuff spoke with Hill, who was armed with weapons and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Sharing her own struggles with depression and thoughts of suicide, she was able to convince him to surrender.
