Students Honored With King Awards

This is the 24th year the City Schools of Decatur has presented Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King Awards.

Proud family members crowded into the cafeteria/auditorium at the Westchester Central Offices Wednesday to see 14 Decatur students honored with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King Awards.

Dr. Will Draper of was keynote speaker and urged the students to take advantage of the opportunities made possible by the sacrifices of Dr. and Mrs. King and others of that generation.

The Voices of the Avenue, the chorus from the 4/5 Academy on Fifth Avenue, entertained by singing "We Shall Overcome." Rodney Thomas was the master of ceremonies.

The award winners were:

  • Clairemont Elementary, Travon Smith and Sofia Deen.
  • Glennwood Elementary, Brandon Williams and Genesis Reddicks.
  • Oakhurst Elementary, Anthony Haszelton and Zasia Jones.
  • Winnona Park Elementary,Evan Beach and Amelia Powell.
  • 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue, Martize Smith and Cate Eppley.
  • Renfroe Middle School, Kwame Oliver and Quincie Peek.
  • Decatur High School, Daniel Gartrell and Ashleigh Rasheed.

This is the 24th year the City Schools of Decatur has honored students who exemplify the character and beliefs of Dr. and Mrs. King.
