Decatur School Board to Recognize Young Writers

Local students participated in the Young Georgia Authors' Writing Competition.

The will recognize city system winners in the Young Georgia Authors’ Writing Competition at a meeting that starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The winners are Keon Sanavandi, kindergarten at Clairemont Elementary; Garrett Gunter, first grade at Oakhurst Elementary; Erin Gaul, second grade at Oakhurst Elementary; Fiona Moore-Keish, third grade at Winnona Park; Ahalya Ramgopal, fourth grade at Glenwood Academy; Sydney Jones, fifth grade at Glenwood Academy; Rebecca Emerson, Sasha Larson, and Acacia Scott, sixth-eighth grades at Renfroe Middle; and Isabel Newsome, Raven A. J-Scott, Evan Hynes and Diondra Powers, ninth-12th grades at Decatur High.

Students who participate in the competition were allowed to submit any genre of writing. This year each school was asked to submit one piece of writing per classroom teacher at K-5 and one per English/language arts teacher at 6-12. System level winners were submitted to the state for RESA and state level judging. The selection process was based on a five criteria rubric, which assessed the following: engagement, informative/imaginative, flavor/originality/word choice, focus (relevance, coherence, movement), and capitalization/spelling/punctuation.
