Decatur Girls, Boys Lose In Regional Tourney Consolation Rounds

GAC beats DHS girls 46-39; South Atlanta tops Bulldog boys 52-38.

As any coach will tell you, it's tough beating a good team three times in one season.

That chestnut proved undeniably true Saturday afternoon in the girls consolation game of the Region 6-AA tournament at the Decatur High Arena.

After beating Greater Atlanta Christian twice during the regular season, the Lady Bulldogs fell 46-39.

In another consolation game Saturday, the South Atlanta boys beat Decatur's boys 52-38. (Details on that game will come later.)

In the girls game, GAC's junior post Ci Ci Buford exploited Decatur's post weaknesses, scoring 19 points, while the Bulldogs' two post players combined for only six points and six rebounds.

The Spartan really clamped down on Decatur's leading scorer, holding Queen Alford to seven points in one of her worst games in the last two years. After hitting a three-pointer with 2:29 left in the first quarter, she didn't score another field goal in the game.

Decatur led 22-14 on a Jordan Dillard basket with 3:04 left in the first half. But then GAC went on a 19-4 blitz over the next 11 minutes to put this one away.

Decatur, ranked sixth in the Coaches Poll, is now 22-6 and will play Heard County in next week's state tournament. Heard, 22-3, the number one seed out of Region 5-AA, is unranked. The game will be either Friday or Saturday at Heard County in Franklin. Β
