$16,000 for Study of Decatur School Lunches

The Wylde Center and the school system would split the cost.

A Colorado consulting firm has offered to study the Decatur Schools nutrition program for $16,000.

The school system would only have to pay $8,000. The Wylde Center has offered to pay for the rest of the study, which would be conducted by School Meal Solutions (SMS) of Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Decatur School Board meets Tuesday and will decide whether to accept the Wylde Center's donation. Superintendent Phyllis Edwards recommends approval.

The school system's Ultimate Meal Committee (UMC) requested the School Meal Solutions be hired after seeking proposals from several firms.

SMS is a new firm. In paperwork attached to the school board agenda, the company says, "SMS is new and while their team has experience in assessing their own districts, they have no previous K-12 clients for which they have completed a school meal assessment."

The UMC studied school lunches in 2012 and came back with a list of ways to improve nutrition.

Among those recommendations was the removal of chocolate milk from lunchrooms, an idea that was later dropped.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Westchester Building at 758 Scott Blvd.
