Andrew Young Visits Friends School

“It is very important to learn about the entire world. If we are going to have peace in the world, we’re going to have to find a way to know each other better.”

On Friday, February 24, Ambassador Andrew Young addressed the students of (FSA), counseling, “It is very important to learn about the entire world. If we are going to have peace in the world, we’re going to have to find a way to know each other better.”

The FSA community was thrilled to welcome Ambassador Young, whose positive influence as a civil rights leader, congressman, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and two-term mayor of Atlanta has been felt throughout the world.

Particularly exciting for the students of FSA, the only Quaker school in Georgia, were Ambassador Young’s remarks about how the Quaker philosophy of consensus building and peacemaking helped him especially in negotiations during the civil rights movement as well as in his role as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, where he dealt with people from so many different cultures.

Throughout his career he has found that approaching people with respect and friendship helps build relationships in order to reach agreement on difficult issues.

That approach resonates with the core philosophies of The Friends School of Atlanta, which hold that all individuals are worthy of respect and that through listening to one another and talking together, there are always peaceful ways to resolve conflicts.

The Friends School of Atlanta is at 862 Columbia Drive in Decatur.
