East College Avenue and Sams Crossing is a busy spot, with buildings on three of the four corners.
But the northeast corner is empty. It has a flagpole and a for lease sign. The closest building is the empty Liquidation Outlet store.
This intersection used to be part of unincorporated DeKalb County, but the City of Avondale Estates annexed it through legislation earlier this year. (Annexation of residential property requires a referendum, but not annexation of commercial property.)
Now this corner is the far edge of the city limits and a gateway to the city.
What should go here? Another business, or perhaps a sign welcoming people to Avondale Estates? If you like the sign idea, what should it say?
About this column: Every week or so, we'll post a picture of a vacant store or lot in Decatur and Avondale Estates. You can tell us what you think should replace the empty space. Know of an empty building we should highlight? E-mail ralph.ellis@patch.com.
I know this is going over everyone's head but the owner, has assembled around 8 acres there and it will never be a park!
The photo is the corner across East College from Lanier Park. I don't think it's part of Lanier Park because I didn't see anything to designate it that way. RE
Interesting, DeKalb County says they own it.
